Re: Needed Verizon tech to "break ip lease" to restore service said by desmophone: It is important to release routers before changing, as the ONT marries MAC address and will not recognize the new router unless its predecessor has been released first. Not arguing, as you got most of it right, but just to clarify, the ONT doesn't marry anything on internet. The IP/MAC association takes place further upstream. If anything, the ONT is the so-called modem. I'm cringing as I say that, because the purists really hate to use that term with fiber. Close enough to say the ONT just converts laser signals to RF video and ethernet signals.
The reason rebooting the ONT may clear up a connection problem is because it renegotiates authorization to deliver services.
Also, in many cases but not all, the IP address can be released simply by letting it time out past two hours.
And if the router is connected PPPoE (rare but not insignificant), it likely gets a new IP each connection. |
