Re: Bandwidth Meter said by Woody79_00:I quit using Comcast DNS Servers when they started the Advertisement Re directions...its worse than Closed DNS(OpenDNS) I now use the National DNS Servers provided my Level 3 Networks 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 they are speedy, and no added junk..I likes You could just as easily use the DNS servers here with no redirection:
»dns.comcast.net/dns-ip-addresses2.php
And get faster responses from a closer DNS server to you on the Comcast network. | | cdruGo ColtsPremium,MVM join:2003-05-14 Fort Wayne, IN kudos:5 Reviews:

| Define "faster" please.
ping 4.2.2.1 -n 10
Ping statistics for 4.2.2.1: Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 23ms, Average = 18ms
ping 4.2.2.2 -n 10
Ping statistics for 4.2.2.2: Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 19ms
ping 68.87.72.130 -n 10
Ping statistics for 68.87.72.130: Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 27ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 27ms
ping 68.87.77.130 -n 10
Ping statistics for 68.87.77.130: Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 61ms, Maximum = 67ms, Average = 62ms
The below queries were ran once to "cache" the lookup on the DNS server, then repeated 10x in succession to compute the average query response time: dig www.dslreports.com. @4.2.2.1 = 29 ms dig www.dslreports.com. @4.2.2.2 = 30 ms dig www.dslreports.com. @68.87.72.130 = 39 ms dig www.dslreports.com. @68.87.77.130 = 70 ms
From any definition of "faster" that I can think of relating to DNS, 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 were marginally to twice as fast as the "closer" Comcast provided server. | | JnKC join:2008-06-17 Independence, MO Reviews:

| reply to ctg1701a I don't get it! If we are talking about milliseconds, there aren't many differences. If we are talking about the presence of advertisements when u foul up a URL; who cares. I simply click the link to what I meant. If that is giving comcast more money, then I would like to see a discount for using the dns helpers. If not; who cares? I guess a blank page is better than saying you fouled up the URL dummy! Oh yeah; bandwidth meter would be fine if I could track u/d with router; otherwise it is a moot point. | |
