2700HG-B keeps powercycling

Started early 09/24 (like around 0200 EDT):

My 2700HG-B started powercycling by itself every 15-20minutes.

This is the least of my problems though. I cannot access the web interface (port 80 is closed), it's stopped doing DHCP (nothing listening on UDP 67), and holding in the reset button for any length of time does not reset it to factory settings (in fact, it just reboots the device and the device connects to DSL just as before).

As I posted over in the ATT Northeast forum, my personal theory is that CMS pushed a bad firmware update.

Help?

I have the exact same problem on same device, started happening the last couple days, can't reset to factory defaults by holding the reset button, it just reboots and retains all settings. Wish I could find a firmware to try and flash it with.

I would have a lot more options if I could actually access the web interface, but no, that has to be broken as well...

Is this a small epidemic...?

I swear, my 2700HG-B has restarted over 20 times in the past few days. I've never had this problem before. It'll randomly reset itself, maybe once very three months or so for no apparent reason--no biggie. But this is ridiculous, it's resetting very frequtenly now. I'm thinking of callin AT&T, but i know they'll charge me the full price for a new 'gateway' since i've had this thing for a few years now (surely out of any warranty).

My network looks something like this...

TJM-RIGG (Windows 7 Box)
AppleTV
192.168.1.75 (XBOX 360)
TJM-iPhone-3GS
TJM-MacBook-Pro
[Plus another Windows Vista Notebook, casually]

I've had the MacBook for a couple months now...And with the AppleTV and the iPhone (both of which are new w/in the past 6 months or so), this is the most I've ever put my 'gateway' to use. Although i've never had a problem until earlier this week.

I've been having the same issue, located in Central Texas. It started about two weeks ago (approximately 9/13/2009), and there was definitely a firmware upgrade because my networking setup stopped working completely, and when I went to rebuild it there were many changes to the layout and format of the screens.

I have to say, if this router wouldn't reboot and if it let me hardcode firewall rules to IP addresses without worrying about seeing the IP address tied to a MAC address on the internal network, I'd have not issues. As it is I'm going to have to find an alternative as I can no longer live with this thing randomly deciding it doesn't seen one of my servers and deactivating the rules associated with it.

Edit: double-checked my calendar and it started exactly a week ago, 9/20/2009.

Check the detailed log it will have a timestamp for the "firmware upgrade"

Another datapoint (which I mentioned in my ATT Direct post) :

2700HG-B only seems to crash when connected to the DSLAM. If I leave it disconnected from the DSL it will stay up as a dumb switch indefinitely. Some packets it is receiving from the DSLAM must be killing it.

Assuming firmware is getting pushed out gradually (say starting on West Coast and making it to East Coast by Thursday), I wonder why we are all seeing different symptoms? EngineerBoy can at least access his router's web interface, but I can't

I doubt that the dslam has anything to do with the modem crashing/rebooting/retraining.
If the dslam was the cause, setting the modem to bridge mode would confirm or rebuke that theory
Its possible that the cms could be making the modem reboot

Your issue is very unique, its possible it was just time for your 2wire to have issues
You should email 2wire and detail the issues you have they may be interested enough to want your modem for study

Would have never noticed the update if i hadn't seen the few threads on here about it...I just noticed the AT&T logo on the »home/ page yesterday; and indeed there was some update. It was 4.-- something or other, and now it's 5.29.109.5.

I haven't been able to test it, but there's something i'm doing that can cause it to power cycle multiple times in a row...I've noticed it a couple times after i turn on my MBP on and begin doing lot of 'net-intensive stuff. Like right now I'm just on my Windows desktop, and it hasn't been problematic for an hour or so.

If "mbp" makes a large number of nat sessions that will trigger a reboot on most any router

Heh, I filed a ticket on Sunday at 1800 localtime (I guess they are in CA), and I got a query for my SN a few hours later, gave that, then in the morning I saw my status changed to "Escalated" but no more updates

Not completely sure of the nature in which NAT sessions work...but it had to have been something with this 5.x update; since it's never happened before.

I'm gonna end up having to call AT&T, but i don't know where to start...this is getting crazy...it's so unreliable now.

An example would be file sharing software and some games that make thousands of connections

I talked to David today. We will monitor the problem. Mine updated last night as far as I can tell. It's now the .109 firmware. Works fine so far, except for the reboot at 11 pm. I am expecting a bunch of service calls coming up to swap out 2wires? Just when I though we had enough 2210 failures!!

What would you guys suggest i do...? I'm out of warranty with my 2700HG-B, and the problem is getting very annoying. And as wayjac said (and from using my MacBook since this issue has started) the MacBook is obviously spurring these frequent modem resets. I'm seeing the few topics in this forum about the frequent resets and don't seem to be finding any resolution.

Is it worth upgrading to whatever 2Wire 'gateway' AT&T's pushing now? ...or will it have the same firmware problems? I know they'll force me to pony up the $80-$100 for it.

One other thing i've been considering is just using the 2700HG-B as a modem (disabling wireless) and using an Airport Extreme--or a D-Link N-router. Or is there another option for getting a better router in my house, since AT&T only does the 2Wire thing?

While my unit is out, I am using an old Westell 2200 from a coworker who had a spare. At first I thought it only did DSL and that I'd have to rig up an old linksys router sitting around (which had been on my todo list anyhow), but apparently it does most of everything I care about and all I needed was to plug it into a dumb switch. (BellSouth and Verizon both used these a few years ago).

I would say basically anything that will do DSL is fine. Someone on the ATT forum said that ATT business subscribers get Netopia 3347-02s or something (which run around $100 on buy.com/newegg.com).
