How to access transmission stats? »

@centurytel.net

Are these the fastest speeds I can get?

I am on the 1.5Mbit/s package and pretty far from the CO (not quite 3 miles).

I have sometimes seen my modem sync up to 1600Kbit/s (and even stayed there for a few weeks without dropping!), but never at 1792. For a few months it's been around 1200-1400, which is actually quite a bit slower than the rates I used to get (it might also be worth noting that when I had DSL set up here in January, I was syncing at awful speeds until a tech came out and fixed it). That being said, here are my transceiver stats:

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1344 320
Margin (dB) 5.0 12.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 57.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 14.3 12.1

I know the attenuation is pretty high (and probably the main reason my modem can't reliably sync much faster), but it simply can't be helped because of my distance from the CO.

Any chance I might be able to see faster speeds, though? It's just irritating paying for 1.1Mbit/s when I know I should be getting the full 1.5Mbit/s instead.

Well, you are right - those numbers aren't so good.

Are those stats taken from your modem's location inside the house? If so, try to get another set of numbers with your modem plugged directly into your NID. (And keep your fingers crossed that those are better).

I've actually had this issue with another provider a few years back. It turns out the DSL mode type was set wrong. In yours and my case, it is and was the G.DMT type mode. See if CenturyTel can swap you to another DSL Standard.

I was lucky as well to get an upload sync not much higher than what you are currently at, the download speeds varied.

Good luck.

Okay, I tested outside today after my download speeds seemed to drop even lower:

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1216 320
Margin (dB) 6.5 13.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 55.5 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 13.6 11.9

The attenuation is 55.5 at the NID, but the sync rate is more or less the same as the results I have been getting inside the house.

Is this anything that can be fixed?

bctrainers: G.DMT Mode is bad? I've seen a lot of people here using that.

You sounds like you need to call in a ticket. G.DMT is not bad and is not the problem. They can set it for ADSL2+ and it's not going to make a bad line better. Something else is amiss.

I am NOT a CenturyTel expert

But to me your margins look to low.
The tech who fixed your old issue may have cut out bridge taps.

Losing 1 or 2 DB to inside wiring is about normal.

But at 15000 ft plus any cable pair issues, bridge taps, load coils, T1 in the same binder will cause some issues. A good tech can look at the tone spectrum and see what the issue is.

Call a ticket in and tell him about dropping sync and sync speed issues NOT down load speed

In addition to the things hazezilla See Profile mentioned, you can also request to have your Data Path changed from Fast Path to Interleave. This will increase your ping times by a little bit, but in many cases it will help your SNR (noise margin) out a couple of decibels. In addition, it gives the line more error correction, so it helps out a bit with dropped/fractured packets.

Another option is to have a brand new NID installed, depending on the type you have currently. Any way you could post a pic of it...inside and out?
