Computerworld - Microsoft today confirmed that it will launch its free security software suite, which has been in development for almost a year, Tuesday morning.
"Microsoft Security Essentials, the highly anticipated no-cost consumer security offering, will be released to the public tomorrow, September 29," a company spokeswoman said in an e-mail reply to questions.
The spokeswoman added that the program will be made available Tuesday morning, Pacific time, although she did not have a specific hour for the launch.
Earlier in the day, Network World's John Fontana had been told by Bob Muglia, the president of Microsoft's sever and tools division, that the company would ship the free software Tuesday."

I had been using McAfee and hope this runs a little faster. I am trying it on my laptop for a few days and if everything works OK, I'll put it on my desktop. |

I take it this is intended to be some sort of "all in one suite", that replaces your current AV, antispyware, etc?
Sorry, I realize I could do a little more searching, but the opinions around here are generally more informative to me.
Who's going to go for it...and more importantly, why? Thanks in advance for any helpful comments. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. Its easy to tell if your PC is secure when youre green, youre good. Its that simple.
Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you wantwithout interruptions or long computer wait times.
Hope this helps. |

Sounds like some pretty impressive advertising.
However, I'm more interested in what people who are actually using it have to say, rather than what Microsoft has to say about it.
(And of course, how effective it really is, comparatively speaking). -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

jabarnutLight Years AwayPremium,MVM join:2005-01-22 Galaxy M31 kudos:2 1 edit | reply to CovMac Ok...well I just watched some videos about it, which explained a bit more. (I suppose I should have done that before I posted).
One thing I noticed, is you have to "validate Windows" (again), in order to install it. No biggie, but that sure is getting old.
According to the videos, they also recommend removing ALL AV, antyspyware programs, etc, before installing Security Essentials. Hmmm...I wonder if that also includes Windows Defender.
At any rate, if it really works as advertised, I guess we have nothing to worry about anymore...right?
Clear sailing from here on out! Heheh -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

CJ join:2000-07-18 USA | jabarnut , I've been running the beta for a while now and i have really grown to like that I don't even notice it being there. It has stopped malicious sites in their tracks that I have gone to. It has caught some files that I have had on my PC for a while that others have missed.
Do, I think it's a cure-all? Absolutely not. I still use a layered approach with a few different programs running side-by-side. But I think this is a step in the right direction. |

jabarnutLight Years AwayPremium,MVM join:2005-01-22 Galaxy M31 kudos:2 | Thanks CJ...I'm sure when all is said and done, I'll probably give it a shot just for the heck of it. And as I've often stated before, with an imaging program, I've got nothing at all to lose.
Thanks again for the comments. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

CJ join:2000-07-18 USA | The other thing I like about it is that the interface is really simplistic by design.
You don't have 10 million different little option to choose from. I have actually steered clear of a few free AV's due to that very reason. They didn't "Just work" out of the box. MSE does.
I have actually had it installed on 5 different PC's for quite sometime now, and I have encountered no problems what so ever. |

| reply to CovMac Looks like a good free AV option, installed on my eval version of win7 (which was whining about no AV anyway) on a VM, and performance is good - AVs tend to really hurt performance when running in a virtual machine, so that's a good thing. -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

I don't follow. Isn't that common knowledge, at least with people that come to these forums? |

| reply to CJ "real time protection" usually means they've wormed their way into the bowels of the OS, installed packet filter drivers, etc. So, if you have two or more trying to patch themselves in, they might see the other as an attacker, or just plain stomp all over each other, or "best" worse case everything that you try to do gets filtered twice over. Usually not good.
Its safe to use a scanner-type thing along with one of those real-time protection systems (for example malwarebytes works fine) because they're not installing anything deep in the system.
Kinda reminds me of the good old days of TSR programs under CP/M. OMG, I am totally, like, old. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminate_···Resident -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

| reply to Ronnie_USA said by Ronnie_USA:. . Its easy to tell if your PC is secure when youre green, youre good. Its that simple. What about when I'm not green? Would that be an indication that Security Essentials is failing to do its job, that I'm profligate when it comes to my computer's environmental factors, or something else? Just curious.
Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you wantwithout interruptions or long computer wait times. I'm already free to use my Windows-based PC the way I want, and have no interruptions or long computer wait times. So I'm a little unclear how Microsoft Security Essentials is going to help me on that one. |
