Bulging tops on caps is bad. Typically you see brown goo on the underside of these caps as they have failed. The purpose of the 'peace-sign' or cross shape on the top is so that the cap will explode with less force by splitting open cleanly. If you look at the rubber plug at the bottom of a bulged cap, you typically see it's partly pushed out and the goo is there.
