"If you wonder why you don't see spam messages as nearly 90 percent of emails in your inbox, however, Matt Sergeant, Symantec's senior anti-spam technologist, cleared that up in an interview. "Most people don't really see the numbers that we see, because we're the ones filtering it out," he explained."
That's not the only reason we (people) don't see as much spam in their inboxes as what typically gets reported in studies.
Much of the spam quantity data is collected using "honey pots" that are intended to receive mail from all/many sources that real mail systems will not accept mail from. e.g. they do not use tools like the PBLs, DULs, PTR records, SPF records, etc. for denying connection to their MXs from illegitimate MTAs.
Statistics can be made to support what ever position one is interested in putting forth, and this happens significantly with spam stats all the time. The only place spam is a problem is on email systems that allow their MXs to accept connections/delivery from illegitimate MTAs that are very easy to identify.
They need a problem to solve. But SPAM is already solved for postmasters who care to solve it.

Columbus, OH | Yeah, to be honest I think a lot of the anti-spam groups have gotten pretty good at what they do to the point the end user isn't seeing the huge numbers as what used to be commonplace. Google used to be the only really good one with Gmail, but nowadays the other big providers and even client-side solutions have gotten good at filtering out garbage with as few false positives as possible.
And if you keep watch of our security and IT admin forum here, those who run their own email systems will attest to how much spam still comes through their ports before the AS solutions kick in. It's still there, but anti-spam techniques have gotten extremely accurate.
