Re: Earthlink EMail Problems

I am experiencing the same dropped connections that others report with Eudora on Eathlink using a legacy Mindspring E-mail only account. My current ISP is Comcast and it works just fine.
I too experienced the Web-mail failure on 10/01/2009 but Web-mail currently works even when Eudora fails.

Today I sought chat assistance and had the following experience:
1. A quick brush-off .. "It's comcast.net's fault"
2. When I persisted I complied with the downloading of a support Active-X that gave the chat-person full access and control of my computer (!)
3. He then checked out the Eudora settings, adding the Submission Port 587 to the settings.
During the session Eudora timed out about 70% of the time that a Ctrl-M was issued (by me) for new messages. The chat-person acknowledged that "I had a problem " and suggested that last refuge of support scoundrels: "reinstall your Eudora" .. hey why not format the whole drive!! I declined.

So they are useless and remain silent about even acknowledging such a widespread problem.

Query: How many of my fellow sufferers are connecting to their Earthlink E-mail by a foreign ISP?

Re: Earthlink Email/POP3 Problems

I have been having the same problems with my POP3 server - pop.interserv.com - 199.174.114.71 -

Easy way to test is with a DOS command window,
and just enter the telnet 110 command.....
BTW - ignore any email program changes requested from support,
just use the "telnet 110" test as it will eliminate "email program" issues, which of course aren't part of the problem.

telnet (your server name) 110
ie -> telnet pop.interserv.com 110

My Ping times are about 63ms - and I can run a monitor all day long with no changes.... so the server is up & running fine,
it's the "application" that is having a problem.

I have contacted (via chat) support every couple of days, and yeah... they can see the same problem, and nothing...

It seems to appear around noon CST, and stays untill late in the day CST. Sure looks like a server or bandwidth loading problem that builds as the west coast wakes up.

I can use Webmail to see my email, but it's a pain...
Of course, all my other POP3 service accounts work just fine...

Would suggest for those posting to this thread,
to include a couple of items for comparison:

1. POP3 server name
2. Server IP address (from a Ping)
3. Ping times
4. time of day experiencing the problem.

pop.interserv.com - 199.174.114.71
ping - 63ms
problem - noon till late afternoon

yeah... you might say Legacy...

I first had dialup Internet service back in 1994
with a company called "Spry - Internet In A Box",
and the domain was called "interserv.com".
It was one of the software packages that had the dialer,
the TCP/IP stack, the Eudora email program, etc....

I think then in 1998 the company was bought by Mindspring,
and I've been here ever since - going from their dialup plan - to just using the Premium Email service (paid mailbox) since I went with the local telco ISDN, then to DSL...

So for me - now it's just the POP3 server - which until recently has been working just fine.

Are you saying that this is a problem unique to mindspring users of earthlink which can be cured by changing the e-mail server in Eudora settings? Please clarify. Thanks.

No. Where are you getting that? I've previously posted there was no fix/no workaround. There is a problem with the Mindspring Email POP servers (and POP servers in the Mindspring Legacy Group like Interserv, Netcom, Etc.) and there is nothing wrong on the customer's end causing this.

As of today, Oct 16/2009, my Mindspring account .. which I connect to with comcast.net .. is working without delays or timeouts.
I shall keep my fingers crossed!

The Mindspring servers are still slow to respond at times and it takes almost a full 5 Seconds while the Earthlink servers respond in tenths of a second. Earlier today there were timeouts on the Mindspring servers.

I'm a Mindspring DSL Customer.

My mindspring.com e-mail account (connected via comcast.net) remains satisfactory today. I relayed that info to earthlink support in the hope they keep it that way.

I have my fingers crossed...but no time out errors today. I was not at a PC all day on Monday so I do not know if it was fixed Monday or not. So far, so good!

Same here. I hope they corrected whatever the issue was and that we never see it again.

Doc...I have seen this problem about once or twice a year for the past several years, but it usually only happens for a day or two. I always thought it might have something to do with the fact that I am provisioned by COVAD and perhaps the IP addresses they use get dropped off the POP server allowed list once or twice a year. At least that is what I was told several years ago when this happened.

Who knows....I am, however, prepared to jump to a new DSL service should things go in the toilet again.

I'm similar to you as I too am provisioned by Covad (Covad+IP).

I don't think it is a what IP that we have issue as that would get a "not authorized" error instead. This is a connect, but no further response from the server before the POP client times out using many different types of clients and never seeing any other response. Some kind of server issue is my guess, but not access list level since you would not be able to connect moments later. If it were an access list by Domain or IP issue, you would never connect AM or PM until the list was restored. I didn't see that happening. Plus it affected all connections as even a poster on another ISP was getting the same time outs as us when trying to check their POP mail. It didn't matter where the POP request came from, so it was the server itself (likely overloaded or not given enough resources or under a spam run or DDoS).

The first time I had the issue email was totally locked out solid for days so I guess perhaps the IP might have been the issue then, but obviously not this time.

I am happy it is fixed and that we still have your stethoscope carefully listening to the fading heartbeat of ELM.

things have been good for several days.

Now a weird thing happened just now - tonight, thurs-fri midnight - my pop3 server appears to have fallen off the radar...
Can't ping by DNS or by IP address - all my other stuff is working ok.

pop.interserv.com - 199.174.114.71
------------

WELL - 12:15am everything is back working, same name, same IP, so don't know what happened or if it was related to some other maint window....

I'm having constant problems with using pop.mindspring.com. Today it hasn't sent any of my messages for over an hour now. I just wasted 30 minutes chatting with someone at Earthlink who made me test out sending emails and then told me to resend all of my emails (that are stuck in my Outlook Outbox) through Web Mail directly. 10 emails that would then be sent twice to my customers! All I wanted to know is when this would be fixed and never got an answer. Ugghhh!

I've had no problems today. My POP checker Mailwasher will stick with a error if the server takes longer than 30 seconds to respond. Sending and receiving have both been functional today for me.
