1 edit | Laptop from TigerDirect....is this a good deal??
I'm not unfamiliar with TIgerDirect's reputation, but this one actually seems like a pretty good deal. Am I missing anything?? Can someone check it out and let me know if there is an item I am missing that makes this a bum deal?? If not...I may be picking one of these up -- Let us so live that when we come to die, even the undertaker will be sorry. -Mark Twain

| Only way to tell is to look at it's specs and compare it to other laptops with similar specs. I bought a remanufactured Gateway laptop with similar specs for my daughter and have been very satisfied with the build quality and performance. -- "Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom; it is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." | reply to Koil The price appears to be the same for other on-line stores. Most ship from Tiger Direct. The thing to note is that most of Tiger Direct deals are yesterdays news. By that I mean that the products are being discontinued or refurbs. That's not a bad thing. I've bought from Tiger Direct for several years and never had a problem. One nice thing about Tiger is that you can still find laptops with XP installed. I've bought several discontinued and refurbs from them and never had a problem. |

| It is not a bad deal at all on a notebook that is slightly dated, but still very usable model.
In fact, there is only one primary thing that you give up with this: It is not licensed for a free upgrade to Windows 7, which is why it is being offered at such an attractive price for the features.
Almost all newer notebooks out now, aside of a few bargain-bin offerings, are licensed for free upgrade from Vista to Win 7.
Hardware-wise, it is a very decent price, the question is are you happy with Vista, or will the lack of a free upgrade to Win 7 be a deal-breaker? -- Deeds, not words |

| reply to Koil Agree with lhamp 100%! That notebook will run Vista absolutely fine, and if anything do even a little better with Windows 7 (don't buy the hype, it will not be a major difference).
Although I look forward to Windows 7 on my next lappy, I am not so in love with it that I would actually buy a copy, when Vista which comes with my current notebook runs perfectly well. -- Deeds, not words |

FWIW, if that is (slightly) out of date, then I guess my PentiumM 1.4 (which I am still happy with) is a dinosaur. -- Striving for Parfection. |

| reply to Koil Hi,
I agree with Drew. The T6400 is NOT the processor to get. your batery life will suffer with this one. If you get the processor above or below that one would be a lot better.
As far as operating systems go, I have used Windows7 but not excited about it enough to run out and buy it. My XP Pro works just fine. When Windows7 comes out with SP1 then I will buy it.
Like the others have said it is a dated machine. I would continue shopping.
My laptops are IBM T41 and a T43 and They my be older, But still get the job done.

Yep...technically, it is a dinosaur! Of course, that does not mean that it is not a perfect;ly useful dinosaur!
What I meant about that model being "slightly out of date", was just that: Current notebooks are now almost exclusively offering free upgrades to Windows 7, as it's release is right around the corner, and it will become increasingly tough to sell a model line without that offer. This is not something that Dell/HP/etc. can just "slap a label on the box" and offer the free upgrade, it is licensed through Microsoft.
If I were buying a new notebook, and was considering the offer that the OP listed, I would be pretty "positive" about it, however, I would take into consideration this: Would I be happy keeping it with the pre-installed Vista, or would I be wanting to upgrade to Windows 7? After all, although that is a very decent price, you would have to add $100 to it, if Windows 7 is an important consideration.
Until the current stock of Vista (with no Win 7 free upgrade) lappys expire, it is something to keep in mind, lower price, but no free Windows 7. -- Deeds, not words |
