Anybody else seeing this? It came through Windows Update.

The Windows Update Agent enables your computer to search for and install updates from an update service. The agent can automatically update itself as needed to communicate with the update service when Windows searches for new updates.

It's a Windows Update Update. They're released on occasion, nothing to fret about.

Yes, I think I saw something similar. It stated it was a necessary update for Windows Update, which I have so far declined to install, pending checking around. Strangely, the offer seems to have been withdrawn, at least here (VISTA 64HP), and a new WDef update has appeared, and was accepted and installed.

And there is: »Windows Update now MARKETING new MS software

[Edit: It's ..... back! See Photo.]

Exactly.
We occasionally need to update the updater, so we can update the previously updated updates.

Is that something like Kenny Roger's first big hit (Yeah, yeah, Oh Yeah ...)?

lol...yeah, sort of like that.
Specifically, it's a "face lift" for Windows update.

Getting back on topic.....

It installed itself on my Vista computer even though I selected the option for Windows to "notify only" when updates are available.

I think this sux.

MSFT thinks they own your PC.
I SPECIFICALLY have mine set to ask my permission to do updates.

I don't want MSFT, the Bank, the Mortgage Company, my mother... ANYONE to decide for me when to do updates and do them 'for my own good'.

Even Critical Updates need MY permission.

I have auto-updates turned off completely myself, rather than "notify me" or especially rather than install anything automatically. (For some of the reasons you stated...along with a few other reasons).

But this is a case, I believe, where even if you ran Windows or MS Update manually, it would ask you to update the software anyway, before you could continue with patches .

I personally haven't seen this one yet with Windows Update (when I run it manually).

But (as redxii See Profile mentioned above), I've seen it many times in the past, and I generally don't fret too much about it.

Haven't seen it at all...latest WU for me was WDefender defs. I've got it set to 'notify me'...but it never does...so I check the upper left line on WU page and let it check that way...I do that every other day.

This is by design - How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer:

"After you enable Windows Update, the required updates to some components of the Windows Update service will be downloaded and installed automatically without additional notice to you. This behavior occurs regardless of which setting you use to enable Windows Update. If you do not want to receive required updates, disable automatic updates in Control Panel."

If things get any worse, I'll have to ask you to stop helping me.

No, but it is their OS, and they can do anything to it to make it better for them.

Uhmm... maybe MS does it this way because they believe your updater must be updated first in order for it to even notify you of other updates, under their latest update-software versions? If, because of obsolescence, your updater can no longer properly access their update services, there's no way to ask your permission about installing any updates, since there's no way for it to locate any new updates and download them for later installation.

I suppose an alternative approach MS could use might be to merely notify you of an update to the updater and halt at that point until you OK'd that. But that might conceivably present problems for other users who use auto-updating... particularly those who require permission before installing updates, but need those updates available locally for immediate installation once they do give permission.

In any case, if the current behavior troubles you, do what I and others do and simply turn the auto-updating completely off - then you only need to remember to manually check for updates from time to time. But you'll still have to update your updater at that point before even being able to see the update lists, as others have pointed out.
