2 edits | [Spoiler] Stargate Universe kinda sucked...IMO...
May contain spoilers.
I've been a fan of Stargate SG1 ever since in the originally movie, and have seen all the SG1 episodes and the,(.... was it two?) SG1 movies. However, I never got into Atlantis. Anyways...
SGU was terrible it's like Sliders meets Voyager meets Stargate. It's been done, and done and done again.
The characters are lame and not memorable. I got more excited seeing Jack, Daniel, and Carter in their 2 minute cameos than the rest of the cast. .... Wasn't that Rush guy in that movie " The Full Monty" ???. »www.imdb.com/title/tt0119164/ LOL he was.
This premiere was two hours of nothing, seriously nothing happened. Oh wow they fixed an air leak. Yawn. In SG1's premiere they went off world, rescued scar and other people, and got Tylk, and had a staff weapon lazer flight. In SGU they did jack all.
They just basically bitched and WTF'ed for 2 hours, and NOTHING happened.
SGU is a snore fest. Terrible F.
**You know what else was kinda dumb. The whole shuttle door scene. Why not just attach a pencil to one of those keno flying ball robots and have it descend on the " close door" button in the shuttle. Then just get the robot back when ever they land. |

| It was good an I am glad they killed off shooter mcgavin right away. The only thing I did not like is the stupid video game puzzle senario. I guess I can agree with you that it is like sliders/voyager/stargate, but why is that bad? I bet you will continue to watch SGU.
Nothing will ever top SG1, but the SGU story seems like it will be just as enjoyable as Atlantis. -- Democrats are not Socialists any more than Republicans are. |

The game scenario was done before in 1984 with the Last Starfighter so no points there for that one being redone. |

1 edit | reply to leer Not exactly what I expected in a first episode of a SG series. First of all, I couldn't help but notice that there were a couple people playing hide the sausage in the closet.
Also, there is the matter of the sergeant that drank too much haterade. We come to find him standing in a closet on report I would guess. I have to wonder how someone with such a temper and hair trigger would end up doing one of the most elite jobs on the planet.
Like Mr 1984 above, I could not bring myself to accept that Carter, Jackson and McKay were unable to figure out the equation |

| reply to leer Just finished watching it. It was okay, I am not overly impressed, but I will give it a chance.
-A senator doing something that requires complete self sacrifice? Yea right.
-I like the computer nerd, he brings comedy to the show.
-The scientist guy reminds me of Dr. Baltar.
-Obviously they are trying to make this more character-oriented, but the writing just isn't there. But then again I am comparing character interaction of Lost/BSG, since they are similar sci-fi/dramas. I would like to see the same chemistry that SG-1 had, but I doubt that will form.
-I do like that the Ancient tech has broken down. This is a big problem I had with SG-A. They were in a city 10,000 years old without maintenance. Stuff doesn't last that long without upkeep.
-The show did get better at the end. Reminds me of sliders meets Voyager.

| reply to Omega said by Omega :-A senator doing something that requires complete self sacrifice? Yea right. I thought the same thing initially but considering his daughter was on board and his chances of survival without proper medical treatment were questionable it started to become more believable. What I didnt like about it was there was no explicit or implied indication of how he even found out about the leak (I guess they cut that seen).
said by Omega :-I like the computer nerd, he brings comedy to the show. I didnt much care for the computer nerd personally. His overall appearance is that of one of the sons of Dom DeLuise and I was surprised to see that he was not. Still this seems to be the type of character that will be saddled with the sophomoric jokes I had hoped would be a thing of the past.
Overall I would say this about the show. I often find myself checking the time index on shows as I watch them. If I like the show I usually check about ~30 min in and if I dont I usually check the time much earlier in. With SGU I didnt check the time even once so I guess thats an indication that I liked it.
I do think that there are some people who just cannot go past the original cast of SG1. Never warming to SGA might be an indicating factor for some. IMO SGA was entertaining enough but didnt really differentiate itself enough from SG1. SGU is different enough (from SG1) to justify the effort IMO. After all I dont want to see a carbon copy of SG1.
I dont buy the Sliders analogy since that was inter dimensional travel with a prop akin to a remote control. Theres nothing like that here. Voyager meets Stargate,
.sure why not but I dont really see anything wrong with that either.
The inclusion of a communication device seems unfortunate IMO since they are not truly cut off. Even if they had to include this device I would have preferred it had been kept a secret instead of common knowledge. |

Our stuff, maybe, but when the Ancients are depicted as having lifespans in the millions-of-years, you'd think they'd know how to build their shit to last.

Voyager for obvious reasons and Lost because they are in a survival situation inside a mysterious and unexplored place - the ship. But I'll give it a chance. So far the premise is dumb but I'll give it a chance. If they can keep and establish a sense of wonder I'll stay with it. | said by r81984 :I am not suprised that you would think that. If you think the whole premise to SGU is dumb then you would not like most scifi shows from the last 20 years. The formula for TV scfi has become repetitive and very downbeat the last 30+ years. I think starting with the last season of the original BSG when Lorn Greene became a mystic. TV scfi went from the upbeat view of the future of the original Star Trek to the depressing 90's episodes of The Outer Limits where no matter how hard men strove they were doomed. To the formulaic pablum and space-based soap operas of the last 10 years. I much prefer the upbeat and full of wonder scfi of the big screen. 5 of the 6 Star Wars, the original big screen Stargate, the Lord of the Rings etc. I think the scfi channel needs to find some writers, producers, and directors that aren't manic depressives or soap opera hacks for a few of their series. -- "Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT-- |

| reply to leer I thought it was ok. It seems like a cross between: SGA - because there are Stargates to new planets Lost - a large, lost (in space) main cast with a bunch of expendables, I'm sure they'll find an island or two BSG - they're alone and will need to find supplies and keep the ship running and Voyager - they're trying to get home.
I like that it's a bit darker than SGA (I never got into SG-1) and that Dr. Rush seems more interested in exploring the ship (and boldly going where no man...) than in finding a way to Gate back to Earth. There should be some interesting conflict there.
So far, I don't much care for the smart kid or his recruitment by video game. They both seem kind of lame. And I'm glad the Politician died. I really couldn't stand him for the limited time he was on screen. Also, someone needs to shoot that Marine (Grear, I think) before he ends up killing a bunch of the crew. He seems kind of psycho.
Even though it's all been done before, I'll watch a few more episodes to see if they can make it work.

| reply to sholling said by sholling :So far the premise is dumb.... Naw, the premise is fine because the characters get to explore an Ancient starship and new worlds as they pass by. The execution was pathetic. All of the characters are cliches, none of them are likable, there was no suspense about the destination of the gate address with 9 symbols, the cameramen could not hold their cameras steady, the lights were dim, and I spent the entire time waiting in vain for something to happen. It was the worst opening to a science fiction series that I can remember seeing. I regret wasting 300 MB streaming it from Hulu. |

| reply to leer I find myself wondering about this Doctor Rush guy.....
I almost feel like he might really be a villain... a sort of Baltar/Doctor Zachery Smith kind of character.
I wonder if he is the one who told where the base on Icarus could be found?

1 edit | reply to leer I'm very mixed about it. The idea seems kind of neat, but the characters so far just are not really doing it for me. I'm going to give it a chance though, see if it grows on me. I think the make or break will be the mix of action to drama. keep the action in there and people will keep watching, too much drama and peole will get tiured of it. That to me was the biggest failing of BSG, at frist they had a great mix of action, but towards the end it became a soap opera.
Oh one thing I hate though, is the camera style, I'm so sick of that documentary "Wiggle camera" crap in new movies and TV shows. |
