| reply to Rook008 Re: [Spoiler] Stargate Universe kinda sucked...IMO...
You are so right Rook008, if the writers and network will work together this has the possibility of being one of the longest running SCI-FI series out there. Of course that is a mighty big if...

| reply to Packeteers said by Packeteers :I think I know why people here are bummed about SGU. It's the background music - it's the same somber type Vangelis rifts they would play all during Blade Runner. Maybe if SGU had more uplifting music and put the lights up a bit, more here would like it. Actually that might help. But the real problem is that it's going to turn into a soap opera. Lou Diamond Phillips will move to take over, the whiny civilians will whine, what little action happens will be predictable, and the same old problems will be used over and over as a crutch. Case in point - water, they only picked up maybe enough ice for 50 gallons of water. That means yet another water foray. The ship is only up to 40% power so that will cause another crisis. They probably missed a few desert aliens and there's another crisis. Food will run low soon and the whining will ratchet up a few notches. The bad Sargent will be bad. 100% predictable.
The ice planet had potential. They had the mysterious noise that would have been fun to explore and maybe find something. Instead they fell back on the tried and true crevasse fall with trapped team member to delay ice deliveries and instead of an uplifting rescue the ice just let's go. What a letdown.
The Lou Diamond Phillips thing is a huge turnoff and they need to kill that and the whole stones aspect off. I'll probably skip this week's episode for just that reason. Instead let's learn something new about the Ancients. Maybe the builders were dissident Ancients hoping to flee oppression by the same Ancients that later brought about the Wraith and Ori. Both used off the shelf Ancient technology so it's obvious they were creations and/or offshoots of the Ancients. Bottom line more discovery and wonder and less angst. -- "Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT-- |

| reply to leer I like the show, but I miss the occasional humor that SG1 and Atlantis had that would liven up the series. At least those shows didn't take themselves too seriously all the time. -- An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. - Sir Winston Churchill |

Actually, the Eli Wallace character seems to be the ubiquities designated comedy relief in this iteration of the stargate franchise. His attempts at humor have not gone unnoticed by me because I had initially hoped that this would NOT be a part of SGU.
Its more subtle and different but its still there. Its just never accompanied by silly lighthearted background music to accent the attempt at humor which was sometimes the case in SG1 / SGA. |

| I think we loyal SG1 viewers have been hanging out waiting for something to happen. So far nothing has. I'm starting to figure out that this is an extension of SoapStar Galactica with episode after episode dark brooding chick-flick plots, and nothing ever happening, instead of an extension of the Stargate franchise.
I firgure they will quickly lose the SG viewers and pick up the some of the SoapStar viewers. -- "Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT-- |

3 edits | reply to Daarken If they weren't hoping to rope SG1 viewers into thinking that there was going to be something interesting happening every week then they wouldn't have named it Stargate Universe. Maybe named it Lost & Clueless or Voyager Meets the Ancients, or Don't Look Here - Nothing's Happening. But they didn't. They named it for the action driven Stargate franchise. | reply to leer Given the departure from the norm I think its fairly clear that no one involved with the project wanted to go down the same road with a different cast. They simply cannot rehash the same thing over and over again and expect it to fly. As much as some viewers may want a return to the old formula a carbon copy would likely have these same people howling been there done that.
Its a departure, perhaps too much of a departure but a departure was expected and needed.
Its not uncommon for some fans to say that SG1 should have ended in season 8. I dont share this opinion but to me it may be more telling a comment then intended. This speaks of viewers who are disenchanted. If the original show and formula no longer sufficed at that point then a copy surely wouldnt have either. If a significantly different stargate endeavor doesnt suffice then one has to wonder if the franchise really holds any interest for these individuals. People outgrow things all the time and thats not a tragedy in and of itself as long as they dont keep trying to fit that square peg in that round hole.
As for predictability of SGU, SG1 and SGA were similarly predictable. In fact SG1 and SGA were even more predictable from my perspective since the formula was all too well known.
At the end of the day the only thing that matters to the individuals watching the show is if they are entertained.
I for one cannot abide a show that does noting for me. I have too little free time for that. Ill make time for the shows I like and Ill make time to post about the shows I like but I simply cannot do that for the ones I dont. |

| reply to leer Tonight's episode was very enjoyable, by far the best so far, and finally something original.
I have to say I really dislike that piece of shit colonel (the one from Earth who took Young's place on the ship). Especially at the end of the episode... showing up at the ex gf to presumably take advantage of her (have to admit those 5sec of body switching while having sex must have been special) is disgusting... especially when he ran like a little bitch when he thought the ship was about to blow up. "Oh noes, I'm now commanding officer, I'm stealing Young's body indefinitely and going through this crazy plan while risking everyone's life, but when the time comes at the end, if it faisl, no biggie, I can just get back to my body and let them die!".
I hope this guy gets a slow, painful death this season. I realize both would have died had he stayed and Col. O'neill (who apparently has been eating too many Krispykreme in real life) he was following order but there's just something weird about him... his attitude, and that last scene at the end...I hope it's not what I'm thinking.
It was a different dynamic and I enjoyed it. Loved the little twist at the end with Rush... half the time I like him, half the time I don't. He can be very whiny, but he's also very witty |

| reply to leer I had conflicting perspectives on this episode.
First, I liked all the scenes aboard the Destiny. I also liked the scenes on earth within the confines of a military setting. However, most other scenes on earth I fond annoying and superfluous with few exception (you know which ones I'm sure ).
I just realized this episode that Youngs Wife is played by Ona Grauer . She was the one that played the young woman, frozen in the ice in the SG-1 ep "Frozen" Season 6. I also think she played the Female Ancient in episode one of SG-A. The one that was left behind and watched Atlantis (piloted by Ancients) take off leaving earth. Ona Grauer was an exceptional beauty back then IMO. She is still attractive but not quite as much as she was about ~8 yrs ago.
Anyway, Im not sure why Young and Colonel David Telford (Lou Diamond Phillips) have to end up exchanging bodies most of the time but at least in the end they had the ability to have some kind of face to face.
At the end when Colonel Telford went to see Youngs Wife I think he was attempting to poison the well so to speak. Get his Wife to keep him mentally invested on staying on earth as much as possible (out of the way),.... either that or,

| reply to leer what I liked about the Earth episode is now they have a possible method of getting home, which will clearly involve them doing more to repair and explore more of the ship - even though few of them are qualified to do so. i also liked how Rush came out of this episode as a potential saboteur but for altruistic reasons. i was surprised how far Earth leadership would go to push and endanger lives for results - something else must be going on behind the scenes we are not aware of just yet. |

| reply to leer I'm not fond of the Earth scenes, and this episode seemed to have more of them than past episodes. I like that Rush is still the smartest person on the show, and slightly evil as well. It makes it interesting. I could do without the Eli and Chloe drama crap. Col. Telford thought the ship was about to explode and he got the hell out of there. lol. I hope something bad happens to him soon. -- "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. L. Mencken

| That was what I was thinking about as soon as I heard about the rescue operation. I was thinking that those who had their bodies physically on earth had very little to be concerned with because they can always just leave. If they were caught on Destiny they would have presumably died though.
I think they said that they had guards posted to protect the stones so I guess they could have used a wireless communication to order the guards to turn off the device rather then to turn tall and run (they would have looked a little less yellow). But cutting and running is still cutting and running no matter how its done.
I thought it was funny how Colonel Telford tossed Greer into a cell without much delay. They still havent told us exactly what he did to get tossed in the first time (I dont think) but I expect it was something to do with discipline
Still I would have preferred if the stones were used sparingly or perhaps in some covert way to gain control of Destiny. Having the crew use them to visit loved one is more then just a little boring for me. |
