Well the 'tool' is a small program to properly optimize (tweak) the PC's registry to allow proper speeds....
I thought I answered your question before. |

I had asked two questions and wondered if the Verizon speed test was just not accurate. In that case, I then wondered if the tool would be any help. I guess I will try the tool to see what it says. |

I'm running an optimized WinXP machine (several, actually). Using speedtest.net I always get results with ~35 mb/s down and 20+ mb/s up. And as you can see from my DU Meter screen grab earlier in this thread, I see ~29 mb/s up in real world situations.
Yet I just ran the Verizon speed test and it congratulated me for my service operating normally, with 32 mb/s down and 8.2 mb/s up.
If I thought that test was accurate I'd be complaining about my speeds being below par. |

| If you want, you can upload real files to the following site.
»hydra.nac.uci.edu/indiv/franklin···oad.html
You might want to upload multiple files, depending on your operating system and the settings. Just open multiple windows/tabs. I use the 512MB test files at OOL's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/
In the screen capture below, I set my meter to 25Mbps with a 10% overhead. The barely perceptible horizontal line is set at 25Mbps (just below the green...sorry if you're color blind, but it shouldn't matter), and each vertical line is spaced to represent 10 seconds of time. I polled the upstream bandwidth every 5 seconds. I witnessed a steady upload at just over 25Mbps for over 200 seconds. I'm provisioned at 25/25 at the moment, but I am signed up for the 25/15 package.
 3 Minutes+ Sustained Upload
No matter what operating system you are using, you should be able to hit your maximum by uploading multiple files. How many, and why that many, is something you would need to research. But at least you can verify what your potential could be. |

| after switching to a new pc with windows xp (with the TCP connections set too 100 from the standard 10) and a different brand NIC....i am now getting 23+ Upload speeds (on actual uploading not test sites) so im happy
im wondering though...when i ran fios optimizer its set for 25/15 even though the connection is really 25/25...would it be setting the optimization for the upload too low? |

2 edits | reply to Dark Knight I just did TONS of testing an noticed that all speed tests show great (about 20Mbps upload speed) however , during that SAME time as the test I uploaded other stuff and noticed that as soon as the test stopped , the upload speed dropped to 7Mpbs. (speed marked via DUmeter) My plan is 25/15 Verizon FIOS Is there something different in how the test files are transferred? Any idea?

| Everyone has to understand a few things about TCP, and you computer.
LATENCY(pings) plays a big part most of the time on the speed a computer downloads from a server.
Next, router CPU usage on ever hop along the way for YOUR route also plays a big role at times with packet loss and or speed.(sometimes networks prioritize some protocols or ports more then others).
Also, most OS's have a self adjusting TCP receive window which allows a specific amount of data to be downloaded before an Acknowledgement(ACK) is returned to the server asking for more data. Some pc's have a low TCP window, and are constantly transmitting data to the server, and if the server is really far away(high ping), it causes the transfer to become slow.
No it is not always fixed by using an obscenely high TCP window, but a decent size is always recommended.
Now as for the computer. A slower PC, will usually result in weird speed test results, or not such accurate results. Remember FLASH/JAVA tests make your PC do a lot of work, especially with graphics, thus the results are hampered with big time for MOST people.
And again, you can not rely on a single speed test telling you your connection is a little slow. You can not expect a server to provide you full speeds all the time! Lots of other people are also running speed tests from it at the same time, don't forget that!
And accurate speedtests I find to be from visualware, and web100 speedtests.
Also, once you see you are getting your top speed somewhere, just because you see it lower somewhere else does NOT mean you have any problem at all. So there is no need to ever post about it. There is no issue. Its called congestion to that server. |

| This is why I stopped using speedtest.net
Download speed 34513 Kbps Upload speed 32325 Kbps (Upload is exactly 3000 low because of an upload to a friend right now) And thats from Visualware's servers.

1 edit | This is why I still use speedtest.net:

And why I don't bother with visualware or NDT tests, this from Stanford:

I'm on the 25/15 plan. |

Everyone has it different! No one can get the same results from the same place, it all depends on what I said above + some. |
