AnonShawUser posted : Try out torrents. Linux torrents, actually. Try to saturate your connection on them. And not just one at a time. go to »distrowatch.com/ and grab the download links for as many distros as you can, to make sure you don't wind up completing them before the next one starts (if you do wind up with a full connection, you'll be done in about 1 minute).

If you still can't max out your connection, or even get close, you CAN call in and request that a senior TSR assist you. You might get one when you call in, but it's not overly likely. Ask them to do an RDA and see the speeds for themselves. If they can at least RDA, then chances are they know something about what they're doing. Usually.

If they seem to act like there's nothing wrong with it, don't hesitate to ask for a callback from someone else. Get their name and rep number. Make sure you write it down. If still unsatisfied, ask to speak with a supervisor. They'll have to call you back, but it is your right. Callbacks are usually within 48 hours, so if you don't get a call back from a supervisor within 2 days, call again, request it again, get their name and rep number.

Basically, 20mbit is completely unacceptable in my view. Granted, I'm no longer a Shaw employee, but I do still know what I learned from experience. And ultimately, complaining here, or on any other forum, will do no good as no Shaw officials will monitor anything going on, or report it as fact. They don't like people who rock the boat.

stolen posted : Remember that latency is going to play a big part of how fast you can go as well, thanks to the TCP receive window. You might want to make sure that you've maxed out the size of that window if your running XP (there is a tool on dslreports that will let you do this here: »/drtcp and the maximum window you could possibly specify is 64K ) That *may* help you get your speeds above 40 mbps. With Vista and Windows 7, you won't see this problem as they've tweaked the maximum receive window to be dynamic and some other tricks to get past the 64K max as well.

Best you can hope for is you get a decent TSR who decides to take your request up to a TSR 2 who then decides to start and investigation to get it fixed.
anon posted : Here's the e-mail from Shaw (almost mocking me):

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Shaw Technical Support. We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the speed through your new Shaw High Speed Nitro connection. Perhaps what is not being communicated to you concerning the Nitro service is that the available bandwidth that you currently have available is greater than the vast majority of sites that are out there. Speed test sites have limited bandwidth that they can allocate per connection. If the test site has a total of 100 mbps available to it, and if 3 people are connected, the bandwidth will be divided amongst the connections. This is of course a very simplified description of the problem. Speed test sites are at best an approximation

The other possible issue is compatibility. If you are using a wireless router then you will NOT get 100 mbps unless you are using a 802.11N router. If you are running multiple computers through a router, than you will see a slow down as the bandwidth is shared between the computers.

If you have programs running, such as file sharing programs and try to run a test you will see slower results as the programs are going to be using your bandwidth. It is also important to ensure that your network interface card is capable of 100 mbps. Check the modem and ensure the link light is blue – if it is not, then your computer is either not capable of 100mbps or is not configured correctly.

The same situation occurred with the launch of High Speed Extreme and the original Nitro (now Warp). Servers were just not able to cope with the maximum speeds available. You will see the most benefit from this service if you are doing multiple connections to different servers simultaneously.

We hope this information has addressed your inquiry. However, should you have any further questions or issues, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone at 604-629-4000, by email, or via live chat.

Here's the e-mail I sent to Shaw:

Hello,

I am quite the advance user when it comes to computers, LAN specifications, Network connections etc.

You mentioned a few points here and I will try to respond to the points which you have made:

1 - I understand servers are not "equipped to handle the bandwidth coming through, however when speedtest connections are made at BCIT to Metrobridge servers at any given time be it morning (8:30 - 11:59 am) to mid afternoon (12:00 - 5:30 pm) the speedtest.net results are always showing 90 - 130 mbps with 18 ms ping time. With my speedtest.net results its showing 20-40 mbps with 30 ms ping time. In addition on »www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthr···t=113945 I'm constantly seeing other users with the same Nitro experience post / print screen their speedtest.net result through the Vancouver, BC server (Metrobridge) and User: vahidpooyan didn't seem to have any problems getting those high speeds - I simply don't even get anywhere near those speeds.

2 - Let's assume that the shared bandwidth assumption is correct here; all computers within the house are either running Wireless N or a gigabit connection with each Ethernet cord attached as a CAT5e link. Personally I believe that should suffice for a connection that is only 100 mbps, however the whole network is Gigabit ready (or 300 mbps Wireless N ready).

3 - Once again, lets assume that speedtest.net simply generates an approximation, and there are users within the LAN whom use bandwidth. During the speedtest.net tests, none of the computers are/can use that much bandwidth in order to drag the results down to 20-40 mpbs!! There's only one computer that uses msdnaa for BCIT that requires high bandwidth, the rest are only used for youtube, emails, light website usage; and even during speedtest I make sure only one computer is connected directly to the modem, no router, for speedtest.

4 - I require true technicians. I understand the Nitro service is new, and most of the Shaw staff are undergoing training, however generic responses from response sheets is not appreciated! I TRULY require your most technical and able staff of Shaw's to look into this matter for me. This is issue has been going on for too long, and I'm tired of calling in or sending emails. I would appreciate if the info you would send me would be correct instead; for example the first top blue light actually signifies that "downstream channel is connected with bonded channels" and the second blue light (link) means its a gigabit connection, rather than a 100 mbps connection as incorrectly stated - even a 100 mbps line should suffice and worst comes to worse only 10% of the speed might be lost; so I should still be able to see 80 - 90 mbps!

5 - I have tried multiple servers, powerful servers in fact: nvidia, Microsoft, ydl.net (yellowdog linux servers), playstation network, sony, intel, amd, asus, shaw, rogers, etc. all run an accumulated (total) 2.5 to 4.5 mb/s! with multiple downloads to each server or individually.

6- I don't like paying for a premium service if I'm not even receiving premium support. I'm paying Shaw 100% of the service, and I would appreciate if Shaw could return the favor and deliver 100% of their service to me.

I would like to request someone knowledgeable within this regards, who(m) does not respond with a generic answer, however with expertise. I've tried whatever I can from my end, I really would appreciate it if you can do whatever you can from your end to deliver.

Thanks.

anon posted : Tried to order nitro and man.. the customer service reps don't know what they are selling... They told me that nitro was a charge on top on my existing service... I had to show him the webpage to show it wasn't... He scheduled me to have a tech over today to install it but now i find out that they don't even have the modem in stock at all... Upset about this i asked the rep if they could give me at least warp until the modem comes in and she is telling me that the warp service is not available in calgary. Once again I had to tell the rep to check out the website because it is available in calgary...

Sheesh... inform your staff on what they are selling.. its kind of embarrassing that your customers know more about the product then the staff actually selling it..

I now have to wait a week till the modems come in... Waste my whole day at home for nothing...

A heed of warning... if you are ordering shaw nitro, have the rep double check if the modem is in stock before scheduling a appointment...

anon posted : Yea man, you missed the launch which happened months ago (Feb 09). You can set your locale to whatever you want. Go into your cookies and delete all the Shaw.ca ones. One of them has your postal code which you manually entered at one point. Then go back to Shaw.ca and type in a Saskatoon (try S7K 0J5) or Calgary postal code, and you'll see the 100mbps service is available.

49224214 you're just embarrassing yourself at this point.
