Armstrong Speed Upgrade

Just an fyi

I just got off the phone with an armstrong operator and was told a speed upgrade should be coming by the end of the year.

He said the 500 package will go upto 10/2mb per sec and the pro will go upto 20mb down.

Glad to hear that

May only be in select areas. I know some areas have FTTH, but for any coax areas would have to be upgraded to DOCSIS 3 and so far I have not gotten any information or a new modem.

P.S. - It was almost a year ago a tech told me that the 500 package was supposed to go to 10/512 (same upload speed) and PRO stay same. So far, that has never materialized.

I just checked again... those speeds are possible with DOCSIS 2, but they would be taxing the system more than usual.

Interesting. Haven't noticed anything around here, may give my modem a reboot when I get home.

Nothing in Medina as of the 10 November.

It would be nice if they kick up the Zoom 100 to about 2 mb down, I would downgrade then back to Zoom 100.

Zoom 100 would probably go to 1.5mb down.

I have zoom 500. I am fine with the download. Don't really need more than that now. Would like to have 5/5 though. The upload is low and with the backups I do now it sometimes takes many hours to complete.

Not sure if this has anything to do with this pending speed upgrade but I couldn't help but notice them hanging fiber (much like I saw when they were wiring our township) up along 224 on Black Friday during one of my shopping sprees. Seems like they may be adding more fiber for more capacity. This means something to me because we're wired to the Boardman system.

Jim, did you notice this?

Ya, still sitting there this morning. Not sure what it was. I thought it was phone line (it looks like it's hanging from a phone line and support cable). Not sure if it's fiber.

Also, is it Armstrong or AT&T? AT&T's CO is a couple of buildings down from where the cable stops.

I noticed a while ago that they ran cabling along the railroad tracks as well.

Not sure when but my uncle knows a top tech at Armstrong and is trying to nab us a tour of the server facility. I will be sure to ask about internet if/when we go.

It was the black cable with orange cones which is fiber. I remember it distinctly, that is what they did in our township. My guess is they're just adding some capacity.

You're probably right. It seems to only be going down Southern Blvd and now 224. It doesn't look like it splits off anywhere (just goes down the main streets) so it may even end up being dark fiber unless they need it. I doubt that line could carry much capacity though, it is only about as big as a cable line. Go down Glenwood by the high school and library and look at the fiber lines running to them. They were installed a few years ago but are about as thick as a grapefruit.

Like I said, it could be AT&T's fiber (I will watch it and see if they run it into AT&T's CO), though AT&T tends to run lines down Market from downtown (I think AT&T's main network runs through downtown then up to Cleveland I think). I also haven't seen AT&T trucks running any new lines for quite a few years..

If you go into the AT&T store on 224 they also (incorrectly) advertise U-Verse. U-Verse was supposed to be their FTTN TV, Phone, and Internet using VDSL to the home. But U-Verse is not available in Boardman. They are actually calling their POTS, ADSL, and Satellite TV bundle U-Verse in this area. In the end it is not U-Verse (though it may be in a few select newer housing developments).

Yes but fiber has far more capacity than coax, strands of fiber are hair thin so a "thick" cable wouldn't be necessary. If you look at fiber trunks going to the nodes, they aren't very thick, they look thick because it's several cables bundled together. But if you look at the pictures I posted in my review, the fiber that runs from pole to pole is very thin, just about as thin as the old coax that ran through here with Rapid Cable/Star Cable (the one's who built the orginal system)/CEBridge/Classic Cable/SuddenLink.

I agree on the dark fiber part, this could just be for the future or for backup. I highly doubt it's AT&T, isn't it clear what AT&T thinks of this area?

There were CCI Systems trucks there late today and they were continuing to run the fiber.

UPDATE 12-2-2009: Odd. There are now two spools sitting there and it looks like they took the line down that was hanging up yesterday.

Yeah something is up. It's definitely on the "cable co" section of the pole. U-Verse would hit the main AT&T office for the area downtown on Phelps Ave. before it hit Boardman.

I suspect Armstrong has big plans for 2010, we just need to wait and see. I believe they contract the fiber deployment and that may be who they have contracted with. Even though when they wired our township it was an Armstrong pick-up and a couple Armstrong construction trucks. Most cable ops are testing DOCSIS 3.0 in various markets before fully deploying, perhaps the Boardman market is one that they might test.

Basically I'm out of the Boardman headend. I've learned that there's a big fiber trunk from the head-end to Coitsville that passes through Campbell.

I've not seen many fiber lines running around Boardman (except for the school), so not sure how you are running out of Boardman. Never seemed to be all that much capacity here, mostly just last-mile coax. I noticed lately that there seem to be more and more of those "phone" boxes (with the *normally* green lights on the side) popping up on poles all over the place. Talking to an Armstrong tech he said they were just equipment and battery backup for VoIP (I originally thought they were fiber RTs).

Like I said the line that they were running down 224 from Southern Blvd seems to be gone east of Market, but I can't get a good look from my car unless I intend on being involved in a 10-car pileup. They appear to have now run the line down 224 on the west side of market and it abruptly makes a turn at the intersection where that church is... So I have no idea where it is headed. I will stop in the parking lot this weekend and see if I can see where the line is going now.

There's a fiber trunk from the headend in Boardman that feeds us. It passes through Campbell. My fiance lives in Austintown and we all have the same channel line-up. They tore down the headend for our old system.

Only reason I had a good look at the line we're talking about was because I caught that light at the Market & 224 intersection, twice on Black Friday.

I was told that Medina will be getting the speed upgrades pretty soon. They are chaning the frequencies of some of the digital channels to free up some room!
