Re: Armstrong Speed Upgrade

Just read a very similar article, wording is switched around. The question is how will they deploy DOCSIS 3.0 to current customers, do we all get a modem upgrade? As far as I know and per my googling, my Arris TM602G is only capable of DOCSIS 2.0.

Probably will give you one on request if current tiers go up, or you change to a faster tier. Makes me wonder if their backbones can handle the extra traffic. Sprint, XO, and whatever other one they use don't strike me as "high grade" networks. I'd be much more comfortable when I'm able to order if they used Level3/Verizon/ATT/Cogent/etc.
But I did hear through the grape vine that my area, when built, will have 3.0 modems regardless of tier if that helps.

You can't make all the people happy all of the time. But it should be common sense to shoot for the majority.

I obviously wasn't on board when it went from DOCSIS 1.1 to DOCSIS 2.0 in 2002, I suppose anyone who was around could give some insight as to what happened at that time.

Ya, all current modems are DS 2.0/1. I don't believe they are even offering DS 3.0 modems yet...

Unfortunatly there is only 1 DOCSIS 3.0 modem commercially available to consumers: Motorola's (which is actually pre-DOCSIS 3.0 and slower). I tried to contact Netgear about their DOCSIS 3.0 modem and wireless-N gigabit router combo, but they are not selling them to anyone other than ISPs at the moment. It's sad that they are not letting consumers decide what they would like yet.

Armstrong's website does not show any faster speeds yet... but I contacted them years ago about incorrect speeds listed on their site and it took them at least an extra 6 months to fix it.

Since the upgrades were all backward compatible they don't typically just give you a new modem to get the faster speeds (it saves them money). You have to contact them and I believe they would need to replace the line filter as well.

Speeds are not going to be increased in all Armstrong systems at the same time. I work for armstrong as a line tech and the speeds were just increased in our area a few weeks ago. We are currently doing upgrades for DOCSIS 3.0 here which will allow speeds up to 100+MBps in the future downstream.
All systems will eventually be the same but some areas get upgrades before others and some wind up being testbeds before upgrades go live elsewhere. Our system here will be the first system in Armstrong to go with DOCSIS 3.0

dodgetech See Profile,

How will things transition when DOCSIS 3.0 is deployed in each system? Will everyone be migrated over with a new modem and keep the same pricing just better speeds or will it be an upgrade option?

Everything will stay the same unless you want the extra speed. In that case you will pay for a faster tier and get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and possibly a gigabit ethernet card in your PC if it does not have one already.

A regular (non-gigabit) network card or router can get between 10 and 100 megabits per second. I doubt DOCSIS 3 offerings will be greater than that. Why would a gigabit card be mandatory?

My exact thoughts Jim. Unless the modem NIC is Gigabit Ethernet only and not back compatible, which is senseless. Why would (or how could) Armstrong push over 100Mb/s?

DodgeTech, im in this area. I live in Delta in the new housing Development. When do you expect to have Docsis 3.0 in testing? Also, who do I talk to about your peer networks. I work in Baltimore and I VPN in to work from home 2 times a week and I notice i consistently get 48ms RTT from my house to our DataCenter in Baltimore which is less than 60 miles but I get 26ms RTT to our New York office. I dont know if there is better peering / Routing that could be done but seems odd.

Other than that, im very happy with my service.

Thanks,
D3STRUKT
