deke40 posted : I have always did manual updates because I want the decision as to what gets installed on my pc.

Here is some info on the Windows Update Agent that was downloaded with MSE.

"If you enable Windows Update, some software components that are directly related to Windows Update will have to be updated occasionally on your computer. These updates must be performed before Windows Update can check for required updates or before it can install other updates. These required updates fix errors, provide ongoing improvements, and maintain compatibility with the Microsoft servers that support Windows Update. If you disable Windows Update, you will not receive these updates."

"When the Windows Update server is updated, a corresponding client update is typically required. During an agent self-update operation, Windows Update Agent files may be added, modified, or replaced. For example, Windows Update Agent files that help display the user experience or that determine whether updates apply to a particular system may be added. This behavior occurs when a system is set up to automatically check for available updates. It does not occur when automatic updates are turned off. For example, the behavior does not occur if you select Never check for updates in Windows Vista or if you select Turn off Automatic Updates in Windows XP."

Now I am wondering if I pick the "never check for updates" and do my usual manual download will I be shortchanging myself?

You are saying Microsoft is going to be paying out millions of dollars (at $5 each person) for all the damage this antivirus application is going to cause? That doesn't follow from what I said. I said that POWER USERS would be crazy to use this not the naive masses. There are not "millions" of power users but power users should stay the hell away from it. I never let any AV do a full scan of my computers as most of them will, no how carefully configured by the user, try to quarantine something that you know is not malware. But this Microsoft product takes the cake in this area. It gleefully deletes anything it doesn't like and the user can't change that!

I have lots of viruses on my computer. None of them have ever been allowed to execute so they have done no damage but I don't want to have to zip them and password protect them so Microsoft's poorly designed AV won't delete them on the first "automatic" run it does! I have one "pet" virus that Avira freaks over but Virus Total states that since it was "discovered" two years ago that only 24% of AV detect it even today after I had a new scan done on it. That says FP to me. I opened it in Vista which is on a virtual machine using undo disks so no harm if it actually proved to be a baddie. It was harmless. In fact Virus Total notes that it consists of just some text and wonders why it was submitted. I don't know if Microsoft's AV detects it but if it does I don't want it deleted. I like to run it by any new AV I get. GDATA detects it with the Avast engine, and Avast has detected it for 2 years, but Bit Defender engine doesn't detect it and 76% of AV at Virus Total have never detected it.

There is another reason to not install it unless you are an average user ignorant about computer security. There is NO reason to ever run a full scan unless you have reason to suspect infection and with this AV you cannot stop it from running a full scan as soon as installed. And since you cannot set it to "Ignore" and report ONLY at the end of the scan then I would never try it.
--
When governments fear people, there is liberty. How could anyone, especially Security forum members, install it after reading that EULA? I have NEVER read a worse EULA. Any power user who installs that crap has to be crazy or is installing it on a virtual machine with snapshots or undo disks.

5 x millions of people = millions of $$$$
