| Explain bandwidth pls - for us Business accounts?
Hello all... just got my bus account re-instated and have been here on this forum quite a bit lately reading about all the complaints on bandwidth, so I'd like to ask the following.
could someone pls explain to me, exactly what the size of my bandwidth is for my biz account (I am the SOHO Standard)...and what kind of costs might be associated when I go "over" some kind of threshold.
also, how do you all monitor that threshold....or does Cog send you an email when you approach same?

For your plan, you have 200 GB of bandwidth.. depending on what universe Cogeco calls home, that's either 214748364800 bytes or 200000000000 bytes (..for comparison, a single-layer DVD is around 4GB).
Cogeco combines the upload and download cap, so both contribute to overall utilization.
Bandwidth monitoring is difficult to do properly, and in a business situation.. it would have to be done at router level.
Cogeco offers a online bandwidth monitor for residential users, perhaps you can use it as well?

Recently Cogeco switched over to UBB (..usage based billing) for us residential users, this means that we get charged if we exceed the ratio.. prior to that we weren't.
Business users might not be billed by usage rates yet, perhaps you should call and ask them.
Good luck. |

4 edits | reply to JVRudnick to monitor, purchase a compatible router & install dd-wrt. enable snmp. install prtg traffic grapher to monitor the wan port. Discover that the data transfer amount you measure is ALWAYS lower than the amount Cogeco says you used. I'm suspecting this is because the modem or firewall is dropping packets (port scans etc) HOWEVER that data still counts against you. If true, seems people with alot of bandwidth could drive up a lot of bills for Cogeco users by flooding them with udp packets. nice.
- edit - just tried that. used udpflood from my co-lo and flooded my Cogeco modem with packets. The modem passes them onto the firewall where they get dropped however that all counts against me. So really, all I need to do is find out the ip of any Cogeco customers I don't like and . I could flood everyone in my subnet. I can see the script kiddies getting all wet over this. Get a shell account somewhere, flood a Cogeco ip range and everyone gets over charges.
As for over charges on business accounts, who knows. Cogeco says (on my AUP & bill) that I'll be billed $10/gig for going over my cap on my business account. Is that true? Who knows. 'people' in the forum say it isn't but the only concrete thing I have is what is written on paper. Dare I go over my cap and find out who is right? If I don't get billed for over charges this month, will they suddenly charge me next month? Will they warn me? Nobody knows.
