| [ TV] Splitting an internet Cable
I know this has been asked in here before but cannot locate.
I am in the process of re doing my office in my home and putting in a 40 inch LCD. Currently I have an internet connection in the office but nothing for cable TV. Runs in my two story house are a bit of a nightmare. Can I buy a high quality splitter and split the internet cable with one going to the cable modem and one going to the Television. I plan to purchase a high definition receiver.
Or, should I just have rogers come in and run another line. |

| If you're worried about signal loss, you can always get one of these high quality signal amplifiers/splitters. I had issues with pixelation on my digital boxes (SD & HD), I put one of these beauties in the basement and problem solved.

| The problem with these amplifiers on the cable modem line is that the upstream is not amplified and it's the upstream that's the real problem.
It really depends on what your current signal levels are at your modem whether you'll get away with it. If you can get the modem signal levels, please post them, and we can give you some idea if you'll be OK. |

| reply to just60gigs I agree with Sbrook. FYI as well anything with the Nextech name on it is a IMMEDIATE disaster with cable signals. First warning 'Note' the gold Barrels on the amp.
Just to go into some further detail, 50 dBmV is my personal Maximum, You will be fine up to 55, but i'm picky. Right now your at 46 dBmV. a 2-way splitter has a loss per leg of 3.5 db right off the bat, and the amount of cable you run will have a impact as well. typically a .5 db per 100 ft or less So your at 46 now, 3.5 for your splitter, and .5 for the cable, that brings you up to 50, which is flirting with intermittency in my opinion.
I would do it through Rogers, they will cover if for you, and balance your signals as required. |

sbrook Premium,Mod join:2001-12-14 H0H 0H0 | Get a splitter, and a length of the fat coax to connect to your TV ... DO NOT USE RG-59 ... your signal here is critical and you don't want to introduce noise onto the cable that you can get with cheap RG59. |

| reply to just60gigs RG6 is what your looking for.
But keep in mind, your going to be getting pretty high up with your splitter. I would suggest going to Homedepot and buying their RG6 and adding your own fittings. It can be a little costly, but You can get a crapo stripper, compression tool and fittings at home depot. If you do go this route, make sure the white dielectric (Wax around the conductor) is Flush with the back part of the fitting, otherwise you will have 'Suckout' and Maintenance will come-a-knockin'

Tool Kit (Cheaper this way) »www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stor···rtNumber
But, at the same time, if Rogers charges you $49.99 as a worst case scenario, then your going to pay more to do it yourself. |

| For testing, presumably you only need a couple short runs of RG-6 ... one splitter to modem and one splitter to TV. Depending on the cost of short premade "Satellite quality" cables, for these, it's the best way. I've seen too many badly assembled home made cables. |

| reply to just60gigs Rogers normally tells people NOT to split the internet cable. They usually only split it once from the line coming in. Then run from that splitter to your modem. If you need a TV line, you can run a 2nd cable..
You will end up having issues putting more than one splitter on the internet line. I had a Rogers contractor do that and a REAL Rogers guy had to come back and re do everything cause the dumb ass put 3 splitters between the road and the modem cause he didn't want to run a 2nd cable. |

| reply to just60gigs make sure your internet line is seperate than a tv line. you do not have to run the internet line where your desk is, you can run it anyware if your like me and patch it into a patch panel and distribute it through a 8 runs with wall plates in each room like me. -- Happiness is like peeing your pants...
