Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

»www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/e ··· dex.html

"The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee also said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics."

The announcement came as a surprise -- Obama's name had not been mentioned among front-runners -- and the roomful of reporters in Oslo, Norway, gasped when he was named.

I always thought this award was given based on results and not expectations. Nominations were due by February 1. Twelve days after he took office. I would like to someday see his accomplishments match this honor. However, the prestige of the award took a hit today IMO.

Just today?
Don't forget, they gave it to a guy that used to blow up bus stops, hijack airplanes and kidnap and kill innocent civilians.
But apparently a single event was enough to wipe that slate clean.

I think it's "prestige" has been on a downhill slide for quite some time.

Really? Seriously? What has he done to deserve this? The Nobel Peace Prize means nothing anymore. Might as well give it to Osama bin Laden for being the hardest man to find.

He organized community rallies in Chicago. And he did lots of wonderful things for the Rev Wright and Tony Rezko. Many of his associates believe in peace by blowing up police stations in the US and bombing the Pentagon. Isn't that enough?

And let's not for get Kissinger - the guy who ordered (along with Nixon, but he didn't win anything) the "secret" illegal bombing of Cambodia - a country that was not at war. It killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians and indirectly led to the war a couple of years later that resulted in the killing fields.

I'm an Obama fan and like the guy a lot but the Nobel Peace Prize is not some sort of good housekeeping seal. It's a pretty subjective deal.

I see that the haters are here on this thread too - people who AFAIK have never posted here before. Hate sure makes folks energetic.

I notice that one of these new posters has Verizon DSL - not something that is available anywhere near Chicago. I guess some folks just can't help spewing venom.

They made it clear that this is pretty much an aspirational award in this instance - it's something they have done before. Also, just watching the hard right having vapors is enough to make it all worth it.

As someone else said, it's sort of the "he isn't Bush prize." In that I think it was fine. He isn't Bush and it's pretty clear that whatever he has or has not done - he certainly isn't a screaming leftist - 99% of the world thinks that's a good thing, as do I.

Yeah. I don't get the outrage simply because IMO that prize doesn't really mean so much any more. Like anything else, it's probably all politics. Just like all the Honorary degrees they get. They were trying to make some sort of statement here, not sure what but whatever. I guess the haters (repubs) just look for any reason to be outraged.

ZOMG!!111!! HE STOPPED FOR A CHEESEBURGER!! WHY ISN"T HE WORKING???!!!??11 BLARRRRGGGG.....

I seriously think that was part of the motivation - to see the Ditto-heads blast off, which they predictably have been.

The reality is that Obama hasn't stopped any wars, Bush's or otherwise - the Israeli-Palestinian situation is as dire as it ever was.

But the guy has talked about multi-lateral action and shown willingness to work with other nations. He's talked about reducing nuclear weapons. He's talked to and about Arabs and Muslims generally in a context other than that of killing them. Folks out there in the world have noticed that and it means something to them. People here who don't get it are a bit lacking in the imagination department.

I was living in Ireland when Clinton came for visits in 1995 and again in 98. In Belfast all of a sudden there were choppers flying all over the place, guys running around town with crew cuts and thingies in their ears. Then AF1 landed and all the American cars - the limos and huge (by Irish standards) black Chevy Suburbans with frosted windows came out of the couple of C-5s that also come with AF1. In a small place it was a bit scary and totally intimidating, at least if you aren't an American. When Tony Blair, the UK PM came to Belfast it was with one car - an armored Daimler - and a couple of out-riding cop cars and that was it. Americans don't get that - how scary and violent the USA's reputation (and to some degree reality) is in its dealings with the rest of the world, and not just during the Bush era. The USA's rep in South and Central America has sucked since the 1920s; almost 100 years.

So after eight years of pretty heavy belligerence most of the rest of the world is breathing a sigh of relief at Obama's approach, and that's what this Nobel thing is about IMO.

But, but, Obama is a Kenyan-born, Muslim, anti-Christ, socialist, pinko, non-citizen! How can you compare him to Mother Teresa?

Interestingly, one of the other laureates you have listed is George Marshall. He was a great general. Certainly not a liberal.

He was eviscerated by the right in the late 40s and early 50s for:

- Implementing the containment policy instead of going to war with the USSR.
- Giving lots of money to Europe to rebuild after WW II.
- "Losing" China to Mao.

That said, if anyone is responsible for the US and the USSR NOT starting WW III in the late 40s or through the 50s it's George Marshall. Plus he steered the US military through W II in masterful fashion. He was totally deserving of the prize even though he made war as well as peace.

But the retrograde, reactionary right wing almost destroyed him These are more or less the same people who are against anything Obama tries to do including health care reform, developing more effective policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, ending statute discrimination against women and gays, creating a more effective and responsive federal government, etc., etc.

So whether he "deserves" the prize or not, this isn't the first time that a bunch of pissed off white guys have gone after someone who is really working to make average peoples lives better both here and in the rest of the world.

Very unimaginative, pretty nasty, and very sad.

You sir, are my hero. That made me laugh so hard.
Don't get why we have to be all political here. There are forums for that and Dennis already had to close a drunken post...

now this is some seriously funny stuff!

I think we all know by now that no matter who we have in any office, they will screw it up. we won't get anywhere until we(us) hits rock bottom. then it will get real ugly, 30%+ unemployment, so many homes going into foreclosure that there are backups in claiming houses for foreclosure proceedings. Yeah, I'm pretty sure in the next 100 years or so we will have to start from scratch.

but as it has been said before, lets talk hot stove baseball, and maybe the Bears in the playoffs!!!
