Re: Record number of L4D-2 Pre-Orders How does this have anything to do with the boycott? No one ever suggested the 40+ thousand people in the boycott group represented the entire player base.
What you need to keep in mind is that it will be the total numbers that tell the story, not the presales.
However, I'm still bothered by the fact they are STILL selling L4D1 - even though it is effectively a dead game.
Will I pick up L4D2? Sure, eventually. I'll wait for it to go on sale for 50% off sometime after Christmas and then get it then. Seeing as I would have paid $25-$30 for the game if they released it as an expansion to the first game, there is no reason why I won't pay that for the new game.
In the end, this incident gave Valve a black eye, so I hope they learn from it and don't make the same mistake next time. --

1 edit | L4d2 is a continuation of the story of L4d 1. The virus has moved from the north to the south.
As good as Valve has been with tf2, no company is that good, and no company should be expected to give a sequel with a new story for free.
I think people have gotten spoiled after getting so much free TF2 stuff that they expect every new Valve game for free. No company could do that, and L4d2 is completely new. It's not like, a roster update with a new box or anything....... |

I was never in the 'free' camp myself. I don't expect the content that they call L4D2 to be free any more than I expect the Half-Life episodes to be free.
However, can you imagine if Valve charged full price for the HL episodes and called them "HL3" and HL4" etc? That's where the objections lie.
L4D2 is an expansion, it's not a new game. It should have been priced and sold as an expansion, not a new game.
IMHO anyway... --

IMHO no other Game company on the planet has repeatedly given out more bang for your buck. I'm sure that if I ever were to put a price on my Valve entertainment over the years it would be under $0.05/per hour. No other form of entertainment can give you that. |

Valve is becoming known for it's deep discounts that actually boost their profits selling games anywhere between 50 and 90 percent off.
Give it a month then buy the game when it goes on sale for $10, $15, or $20 and stop complaining. It's what I do.
Another positive to doing this is that you get to let the early birds be the test rodents and bypass all the major bugs and imbalances that appear in early versions. --

Actually I am waiting for the price to drop. I've always said that I wanted to pick up the game, I'm just not willing to pay full price for what is essentially an expansion. However, I'm totally content to wait it out, and then the price drops enough I'll pick it up. I'm sure many people will do the same. So I'm not really boycotting the game, I'm boycotting the full game price for an expansion.
However, had Valve released it as an expansion to begin with, they wouldn't be having slow sales. Can you imagine if they released it as an expansion at $29.95 with no pre-sale discount? (pre-sales would get beta access though) They would be selling loads, and those sales would continue right though lanuch day.
I put the question to people who have bought it, and no one has yet to say that they feel this game is worth $50. While I have only asked a half-dozen people, the general consensus seems to be that L4D2 rates a 'meh' in terms of the 'wow factor'. --

Did you even read what this thread is about? Valve is making record sales from L4D2, the actual numbers are not even posted anywhere and yet somehow your mind is in reverse and sees slow sales... hmmm...

That's like saying that CoD Modern Warfare 2 is an expansion to CoD4-MW, it's just not the same game. |
