WiMax DIY Question

I live on the barrier island off of Long Island and there is no broadband or dsl available. Anyone know if it is possible to use wimax or something like that to get broadband from a friends home on the mainland about 5 miles away (mostly over open water)?

I was wondering if I put an antenna on his roof facing my house with an antenna on the roof if it would work. It would then need to be hooked to his cable broadband. (probably not legal, but still want to know if it could be done and approximately what the cost would be).
