| Can Cogeco throttle websites? Rapidshare upload is now 1kb/s
I used to upload on rapidshare with no problems, I just tried it recently and it's now between 1 - 4 kb/sec! I can't see this being a problem on RS' part since I've uploaded at my full 1Mbps before so I'm thinking that Cogeco is throttling my uploads on RS. Is there a way I can stop this and get them to stop stunting my connection? On RS you have to upload files in order to be able to extend your account, I spent money for a premium account and now Cogeco is making it impossible for me to use the site without paying constantly! In the last three months I was only over the limit once on Standard, I've upgraded to Pro and haven't gone over yet so I don't know why they would throttle my upload speed on here. |

| reply to cogggg Maybe you have an idea why speeds would be so slow then? Why they would suddenly halt to a dial-up speed after working perfectly fine even though RS is working perfectly fine? The speed drop didn't just come up out of thin air and every other website or program I use for uploading works without a problem. Could you tell me what you think is happening instead? |

@cgocable.net | I checked with other people, all their upload speeds are normal. |

have you tried another computer? have you done windows updates recently? have you tried FF instead of IE or ther other way around? Does rapidshare allow FTP uploads, how is that? |

| reply to exseven I haven't changed anything with my computer, no updates or anything like that. I can't try another computer with the same modem since I don't have a second comp here. I have tried FF, IE and a Rapidshare uploader program offered on the site but they all give the same slow speeds. I've uploaded to several different sites and they all work fine.
I don't know why only Rapidshare has the super slow speeds and I can't think of anything I've done with my computer that would strictly limit only that website's upload speeds. all of this is making me conclude that Cogeco might be throttling it since I use RS a lot for uploading/downloading. Also my download speeds on the site are relatively the same, between 1.2 - 1.6MB/sec (sometimes it goes in the higher range like 1.9 or 2MB/sec but if they were going to throttle my D/L speeds it wouldn't be by a few hundred kilobytes). |

| reply to cogggg I also get low upload/download speeds - tough I rarely use rapidshare so it doesn't bother me.
I also get ridiculous slow download speeds on ASUS/Gigabytes driver pages. Starts at 1.6 MB/Sec, then at the same % every time it drops to maybe 10-20 KB/Sec. My neighbor and friend also have my issues, only seems to be happening on Cogeco's network because I can access the files fine via tethering from my PC. -- I love fish sticks. ASUS's page has been like that since they had a web page. USA downloading is always sketchy, sometimes fast, usually slow. You'll often find consistently faster speeds downloading from one of their .cn sites. |

@cgocable.net
| reply to cogggg Well I called up Cogeco and got the typical 'We don't throttle!' message.
I don't know what I can do now, I messed around with my connection as much as possible and no matter what it still gives me single digit kb/sec whenever I upload to rapidshare. Mediafire, sendspace, etc. all work fine it's just that one site. If it was a server problem on RS' part my downloads would be suffering too but they're going at full speed.
Anyone know what I can do now? Cogeco is saying one thing while the site and everyone else is saying another. I just want to keep uploading to RS like I have been. |

I tried to test again for you today but I received a message saying the site is too busy... but the last time you reported slow speeds, I tested and received much faster speeds. |

| I've been asking for help from other people and it seems like the only conclusion really left is that something is being throttled or limited. If anyone can come up with a reason why:
-Only rapidshare.com is affected -Only uploading on rapidshare.com is affected, download speeds remain the same -The problem only started happening on Friday, speeds usually were between 80 - 100kb/s but now remain in the single digits -Resetting modem, using different browsers, changing back from a static IP, upgrading router's firmware have done nothing to change it back -No one else using rapidshare is having the same problem
I can't think of anything I did recently to my computer that could make ONLY rapidshare get the upload connection limited to such a small amount. Does anyone have an idea on how this could happen? I'm still thinking that Cogeco's throttling my upload speeds to the site. |

1 edit | hm, sorry I thought you meant downloads - I have be honest, did not read the first post!
In any case, I just tested uploads to RapidShare and yep,
--- I am getting max 10KB/s in uploads --- generally 8KB tho.
Uploading via FTP to a server I get my max which is 1Mb/s almost.
So it would seem something is indeed messed up, I did not notice this because I never upload to rapidshare.
P.S. Via https the speeds barely get over 3KB/s, though they sometimes hit 8KB/s --

1 edit | remember rapidshare is a CDN, and the server you connect to through your VPN may not be the same as the one you connct to direct from cogeco. Run a traceroute to the ip you upload to (most likely found via netstat, not rapidshare.com) and see where they lead |
