Frontier must cut my speed by 75%!

As you can see in the post one or two below I have been having some problems with errors and dropped connections.

It is hard to be sure, but they seemed to start a few months ago when they increased my speed from 500 to 1000 to stop me from going to RoadRunner.
Friday a tech came out, blamed my problems on a bad phone jack and upped my speed to 2000. Then I really started having problems.

Today they dropped my speed back down to 500. It has only been an hour, but the error count has gone to zero.

But I guess I am off to RR because the speed sucks. I signed two year agreement, but that was based on the increase in speed. Without that I don't see there is an agreement.

Comments?

Maybe I spoke too fast...
Right after writing this post my service got all squirrelly.
It is back up to full speed, and the errors are back.
Maybe something going on; maybe.

It would help if you posted some relative info, like screen shots from your modem's line characteristics.

Log into your SpeedStream, go to Gateway Health and post up your DSL Statistics, as well as your System log. I'd like to see what the reason may be for having to drop down the speed. The SpeedStream can be found at »192.168.254.254 with the username and password of admin/admin .

Okay, I will try to post them; I am not quite sure how though.
As you can see, if I got them posted..., that the errors have reduced a bit lately. They were running about 1 for each 10 blocks received.

I hope this makes sense to you.
Everything seems to have been running fine for the last hour or so.

Well, I can see the reason for Frontier messing with your speeds. When it comes down to it at the moment, the line does have a bit of downstream and upstream attenuation on it. The upstream looksnas though it is having an isse as normally the attenuation works in a 2-1 ratio, where the downstream is double that of the upstream. At the moment, your line also has an SNR of 14dB which is high enough for Frontier to let you get away with a speed. Any lower and the techs are prone to lowering the speed.

May I also ask you, if you have voice service with Frontier how does it sound? Do you have any noise on it (static or crackling, or even buzzing) or does it sound a little funny?

It sounds fine.
The tech Friday told me that voice and DSL are on separate lines. Don't know if that is true.

But check these statistics out!
Service seems fine though.

Is this something they are going to be able to make right?
Are they going to blame it on my wiring?
Could it be the modem's fault?

What the tech may have been talking about if the DSL is set up on your primary line is that there may be a DSL/POTS splitter out by your NID which is filtering out the house but allowing the DSL to work on one unfiltered cable.

Otherwise your SNR is still good. Seems to be holding up unless the modem recently rebooted. For the issue, it all depends. DSL can be tricky to work with over longer lines or with higher speeds, especially if the lines are old. It's most likely not the modem's fault. The SpeedStreams tend to cope with bad lines pretty well, but of course every modem model is different and works differently on lines. Take the Westell on my Verizon line for example. It's capable of syncing over very long lines, however it's also very sensitive to noise due to this ability it has of syncing over longer lines. My SpeedStream on the Frontier line seems to be able to receive and send a stronger, "less noisy" signal between the DSLAM and the modem. I do notice however the SNR does drop down from 23-24dB all the way to 6dB from time to time on my SpeedStream and I think that's simply due to the way the modem was designed, probably not due to Frontier's copper which is pretty new out where I am (less than 20 years old. You don't want to know how old some of Verizon's copper is in my area. Some of those lines are in their 60s and have turned to dust, but are still in use). It's a great modem though as it's giving me good enough stats to push ~6Mbps over my line, despite it being a 2 mile long line to the remote.
