| Captioning on Mute Issue with the SA8300HD
I recently made the jump to an HDTV and a HD cable box (SA8300HD) with DVR. Did the install myself using an HDMI connection between the box and the TV. Everything went smooth. However, I am having a problem in one area. I want to have closed captioning activate when I hit 'mute'. I've always had this setup on my previous TV's. I find it very useful if I have to mute the sound but want to still follow the dialogue. Before posting I searched the threads. Based on what I found I enabled the captioning and set the mute option in the cable box and not the TV. I also set the remote to control the volume and mute with the cable box and not the TV. The results are that the captioning does indeed come on when I hit the mute button but the volume does not actually mute. Nor does the remote actually control the volume. The volume graph and mute symbol do appear on the screen.
So...My question boils down to this: How can I have the mute captioning option and have the remote actually work with the volume on my SA8300HD connected via HDMI to my HDTV???? Thanks again. |

| reply to john150 The theory here is to use HDMI for video only so you aren't losing picture quality and composite (Red/White) for audio only.
Most surround sound receivers have options for sending video only though HDMI because you'd only want audio to go to your external speakers and not the tv. With this experiment you're trying to see if the audio options within the cable box do the same type of thing for the HDMI cable and in it's place you'd send the audio to the tv with the composite (red/white) analog cables. |

| reply to john150 Thanks all. I will try but on my TV I have to select a source. I don't know that if I have HDMI selected as my source if it will pick up the audio from composite cables. All I am trying to do is have the captioning come on when I mute the volume. But, of course, I don't want to lose the HDMI. Is this a common obstacle or do most people not care about the 'captioning on mute' feature? |

What you want to look for is if one of your HDMI inputs on the TV is designated as 'HDMI/DVI' -- if it is, then there should be a set of analog audio inputs that correspond to that HDMI/DVI input. |

Now, is there any way to do this with a PS3/Blu-ray? There is just the HDMI and the proprietary A/V outputs. |

@optonline.net | The PS3 will send the audio through the HDMI wire to your TV, or you can connect a digital audio cable (not sure if it's coax or optical) from your PS3 to your audio receiver. |

| reply to john150 OK... Have to revive this thread. I tried using audio cables from the audio out of the SA8300HD to the audio inputs for DVI on my Samsung LN46b650 HDTV. No go. When I switch the audio output from the box to 'other' or 'Dolby' I get silence. As a reminder, all I am trying to do is have the captioning come on when I hit the mute button like I've had on all my older TV's. I of course want to use HDMI for the video. Am I out of luck or is there a way? Thanks. |

1 edit | It seems to be a Catch 22 situation trying to get the captioning with mute. I am able to get the captioning to come on with mute through the cable box but it wont actually control the volume. In other words if I mute through the cable box the captioning will come on but it has no effect on the actual volume. There are 3 choices in the audio output settings in the box. They are HDMI, Other and Dolby. With HDMI I can control the volume at the TV but not the box--but this does not display the captioning with mute. The other two choices produce no audio at all even with audio cables added from the box to the DVI audio inputs on the TV as suggested above. Again, this is with the source selected at the TV as HDMI (which I want to use). Am I missing something? Is there any combination of settings and/or cables (while keeping HDMI for video) that will make this happen? Or is it an impossibility to have the captioning come on with mute using an HDMI cable? |

1 edit | Sorry, I haven't much experience with this to do more then give you a work around.
You could buy a programmable remote, there are some that are not that expensive. You could then control the Volume at the TV and create a Macro for Mute which would send a Mute command to both the TV and the Box. Reviews of remotes can be found at
»www.remotecentral.com/remotes.htm
I believe that there was an inexpensive one that many people were buying on Ebay but that was years ago and I don't know if it is still available. In doing a little research I believe it was an Atlas remote DVR/PVR 5 device with a JP1/3 port (it was for the Brighthouse cable system)
