Need to hire big wig excecutives

That's what a lot of big corps are really doing. Firing the work force and hiring some 'chiefs' to take up the salary difference. for every 25 people or so they get a 'director' of sort. A lady I am doing a project for that works at Hamiltonsundstrand told me that's exactly what they did. Fired a bunch of engineers and such then Hired a corporate big wig at the salary equivalent they fired all the major workers. Go figure aye.

That's called going vertical where they expect one guy to do it all. The 24hr workforce. But usually I seen salary be less for what the job entails.

Well like it or not, the Bosses and Owners run a Company, and you were hired for a particular skill or knowledge. Once there is no perceived value, you are expendable. Unions were needed at one time to protect the "Common Worker," but now a talented, well educated person really doesn't need that protection. A good Company that wants to be profitable, will protect and keep all their good Employees, and get rid of the "Dead Weight." Now in all of these Posts, no one talked about Skills and Education. This is now vitally important, the day of the "Common Worker" is gone!

The problem, from my perspective, is that there are many who have not just an inflated, but an over-inflated, perception of themselves and their value.

It's always easier to blame the perceived ass-kisser for getting rid of you than it is to examine everything from an objective viewpoint. Why? Because it allows people to say "It's not me; it's them". Although that is certainly true in some cases, it's not true in all of them.

Your statement also goes to explain why some people get better raises and benefits than others: perceived value. I've always believed that the best way of getting ahead and getting better raises is to provide more. The only way one will ever get a company to give them a $10,000 raise is to show how their actions have already contributed more than that to the bottom line beyond what the company's expectations were to begin with.

Bottom line: if you want a $150,000 job you have to provide $180,000 worth of value to the company. Unfortunately not many seem to understand this concept these days. But I guess that's OK too, I guess, since the world needs front-line workers as well as management.

Amen to this!

This has always been my outlook on it and if the entire nation had it we would be so much better off! The union mentality was made for miners and mill workers back in the day.... the harder the job now the more you get paid, it is no longer needed....

You`re a complete tool if you think somehow we live in a pony and rainbow filled world where hard work and competence is properly rewarded by benevolent management who care more about justice than the bottom line or their personal agendas. Seriously man, how old are you?

Really? Seriously? Who decides what you`re worth in the end? Some upper level management type who cares only about the company`s profit and satisfying the shareholders?

`Worth` and `value` are incredibly nebulous concepts that can always be negotiated over. There is no set amount or scale, and this is why unions are necessary to prevent employers from having all the leverage to price you at the minimum.

You actually don`t know anything about unions or labor force history. Learn some of it before speaking.

No the question is how old are you? You seem to have a chip on your shoulder, and believe Life owes you something. I'm the first of the "Baby Boomers," and didn't get my College Degree till late in life. I think our generation had more ambition, and I grew up with the notion education would open doors. I wanted to Fly for a living, and I got part of my dream I flew BirdDogs in Vietnam for the Army.

Anyway, life has a way of throwing curves at you and I ended up working for a large Corporation Scott Adams and his Dilbert makes fun of, Pacific Bell. If was full of good and bad Executives and Employees, but I loved every minute of it. I started off in Non-Management, and like I said got my Degree while working and Retired after 31 years from Management. We were right in the middle of the Silicone Valley, and Pacific Bell along with Al Gore invented the Internet. Life is what you make it, and you have to play with the cards that are dealt to you, but Education is the key.
