| 2 Wire 2701HG (Windstream) to be used on Embarq
I bought a Windstream 2701HG hoping to use it on Embarq DSL. I googled for all the help I could find and still can't get it to work properly. It does contact the Internet and I can use Eudora to get my Embarq email. I can't do anything with any browser as it goes to Winstream for activation. No matter how many windows you open - all go to Winstream for activation. I know nothing about routers.
Any suggestions are welcome. MDC pasted below:

It sounds like the 2wire is redirecting the browser Have you tried disabling the 2wire redirects 2wire ip address/xslt?PAGE=J30 Remove the check mark from "broadband status notification" |

| This post is through the Windstream 2 Wire 2701HG
I don't have a clue as to what I did, but it is finally working great!
I did a reset to factory settings as you suggested. I had to change the PPPoE of Windstream to DHCP. I think I put an Embarq address I got somewhere on the web.
The first time I tried my browser it did try to go to Windstream authorization - but when I put Google in, it went there and everywhere else I have tried. I am about afraid to turn the power off to move it to another location!!!
The wireless works fine too. All default.
Power level is at the default 4 and the signal strength is fine for a computer downstairs - I would guess 10 is the strongest power out. Working OK so I didn't mess with it.
Here is the System Info - which may help anyone else fool enough to try a Winstream modem on Embarq!
Many thanks for your help.

wayjac Premium,MVM join:2001-12-22 Indy | Can you post some screen images of the windstream 2wire gui?
Did you use the other suggestion......disable the broadband status notification?
It would be easy to see if that's what stopped the redirects |

| Thanks to wayjac for his help. I don't know how to post screen images of the setup.
I tried to set up another Windstream 2701 on Embarq (CenturyLink now) and got into the same loop of Windstream authentication. The main thing I did was on Page=J05, set VPI 8, VCI 35 and set Broadband Connection type to Direct IP (DHCP or Static). I left all other settings as they were on Windstream. When put on line, it went to Windstream for authentication as the other one did. After several time doing this, I noticed a place you could tell them you got your 2701 from a "third party." I did use the "third party" check and the unit then surfs the Internet fine on CenturyLink. By the way, I did contact 2 Wire support and after several exchanges I got this reply:
"Willhopp, I did some research into your issue. When this gateway comes online it will automatically try and take you through the registration process. Since you are not a Windstream customer you will be unable to proceed. The best option would be to ship this unit to us for reflashing. If you are interested in this and are in the continental US please ship to
ATTN xxxx 1100 West Grove Parkway Suite 102 Tempe , AZ , 85283"
I did not return my unit because I got it working, but for my money, this is the best customer service I have experienced in a long time. The only cost to me would have been the shipping to them, as they told me there was no cost for reflashing and they would pay the return shipping costs. Hard to beat that! |
