When is Star Wars comming out on Blu-ray?

I have all the movie's in full frame DVD format and it just looks like crap on my Magnavox 47" 1080p LCD widescreen TV. Even when the Magnavox Blu-ray player Upconverts to 1080p/60Hz it still looks like crap. When are all of the Star Wars movie's being released on Blu-ray? Money is not a problem for me at this time.

The Man With the Golden Gun (1974) BD 1.85:1

All the money in the world won't get you Star Wars on BD...

It's not even close to a release date yet... I'm guessing at least a couple of years. See this article:

Yeah, upconverting a DVD to 1080p is still SD, and although the DVD may look a bit sharper, it's nowhere close to high-def.

On a side note, I recently bought a couple of James Bond BD releases ("The Man With the Golden Gun" and "License to Kill"), and they look awesome on BD. The screenshot above is a digital camera pic of the TV screen... Britt Ekland looks even better than that when viewing it live.

I can't wait for the first 3 Star Wars movies!

Full frame anything is going to look like crap. I can't imagine watching Star Wars is 4:3 format.

At the time I bought it in DVD full frame format I was using an old 60" inch analog tube TV I bought back in 1999. That was 10 year's ago before I entered the word of high definition.

4:3 any movie should be illegal, even though i hated the thick black bars on my 27" TV i still always got wide screen. and now it has really paid off since ive moved up to a 50" Plasma

When I first heard about widescreen I just thought at the time that not all the image was being displayed because the tube TV was full and not wide. When I got my 47" inch at first I couldn't figure out why the left and right of the screen were black. I looked on the back of the DVD case''s and found that each Star Wars movie had been formatted to fit a 4:3 tube TV screen. thank god it was the only DVD movie set I bought in full frame.

Are you kidding?!
Do you know how long it took for George Lucas to even release Star Wars on mainstream DVD? If he releases it on Blu-ray (which I doubt) a better format will have come along by then.

Doesn't George Lucas know that Blu-ray is better than DVD.

There are 1080P rips in "the usual places". George is gonna wait until everyone and their grandma has a BD player.

I'm guessing BD will be the high-def optical format for at least 10 years or so... Star Wars will probably be available in a couple of years on Blu-Ray, most likely all 6 movies, in a special presentation box with all kinds of additional goodies... maybe even a C3PO watch.

Yeah, and with a price that'll make you take out a loan to buy the set!

The Wizard of Oz 4:3 OAR (1939)

North by Northwest 1.85:1 OAR (1959)
I'm thinking 199.99 list, $179.99 at Amazon.com. Probably will be released for Christmas 2011.

[EDIT] Being an old film buff, I did get that "Wizard of Oz" (1939) boxed BD set, and it is awesome. It's amazing how much better even old classic films look on Blu-Ray. I'm now waiting for Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" (1959) on BD, which will be released on 9 Nov. I'm hoping that "Vertigo" (1958), "Rear Window" (1954), "The Birds" (1963), "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1956) and "Psycho" (1960) will be released on BD before too long.

"North by Northwest" (above) was shot in VistaVision (as were many films in the mid-late 50's), and its 1.85:1 OAR (original aspect ratio) looks great on a 16:9 HDTV screen (1.78:1 or so), with just small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

It will be remade before it comes out in blueray.

I for one would love to see an exact remake but I am not sure I would like any of todays actors.

Yeah, I think the newer SW's pale in comparison to the original 3 (1977, 1980, 1983). I'd love to see Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles. Perhaps "Star Wars: Return of the Senior Citizens".

You didn't hear it from me, but it was broadcast in 1080p 16:9 HD by Sky and a network in Germany. Someone captured it, replaced the audio tracks with the English DD 5.1, and released it ... all three of them. It's not true Blu-Ray quality, but the broadcast source was supposedly 35Mbps. It's still 1000x better than anything else out there right now though. I can't wait for it and the Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray.

Matt good call, somehow those 1080p's ended up on my main media server .mkv file format. As you say, they are 1000x better than any previous DVD release.

I can hardly wait for "North by Northwest"! It's one of my all-time favorite movies, along with "Forbidden Planet", and "Destination Moon".
