ABPremium join:2006-04-04 Leesburg, VA kudos:3 | Unless you know that you specifically use it, I'd say the simplest 'fix' may be to just uninstall 1.1 SP1. No update needed for something not installed. |

SteelyI rise when the sun goes downPremium join:2000-10-15 Princeton Junction, NJ kudos:1 1 edit | Thanks, AB. I found THIS current discussion and see that the OP solved his problem by reinstalling version 1.1 "and then the new update installed fine."
When I go to Add/Remove Programs I see MS .Net Framework 1.1 and MS .Net Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366), both available to uninstall. Should I uninstall both of those...and, if so, in which order? Then, if I should want to re-install .Net Framework 1.1, do I have to first install .NET Framework 1.1 and then Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1? And finally, do I then try installing yesterday's update KB953297?
EDIT: BTW, I don't see anything about .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 in Add/Remove Programs & Updates. Should I? |

| I have only the .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 installed, and it's listed as exactly that in A/R Programs. So I can't say how 1.1 would be listed, but it seems likely it would be the same way.
SP1 is 'all-inclusive' I believe, so there should be no requirement to already have 1.1 installed.
I'd imagine uninstalling 1.1 would take the hotfix with it, but I couldn't say definitively. I'd check afterwards to see if the hotfix was still there.
I wouldn't try reinstalling anything 1.1 or 1.1 SP1 related unless I came across something that told me it required it.
I have personal experience myself (re: your first link) with having to reinstall a .NET in order to get it functioning properly. .NET has somewhat of a history of being persnickety; one of the reasons why I suggest not even installing any particular version unless specifically needed. |

You were correct. Removing 1.1 also eliminated the old hotfix. I reinstalled 1.1 (sorry, had to try!), then 1.1 SP1, rebooted, ran Microsoft Update, selected KB953297...and...

Another member PM'd me that he/she was having the same issue on 2 of 4 computers. I'm sure there are more folks. The solution is to uninstall and then reinstall the version of .NET Framework associated with the failed security update. Thanks for your help! |

It's still relatively small unlike 3.5. I really never use any of them except when I do Nlite installation and then I have to install 2.0 SP2. |

 | reply to Steely How is this at all an acceptable method of fixing the installation of KB953297. I'm in a corporate environment and i'm having similar issues with a number of test machines.
MS, Please release an updates KB that does not require removals and re installs of these .Net Framework. That will cost me countless hours of work. |

Btw, here's a quote from Microsoft on SP2:
quote: Overview
The .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 provides cumulative roll-up updates for customer reported issues found after the release of the .NET Framework 2.0. In addition, this release provides performance improvements, and prerequisite feature support for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.
I take the "cumulative roll-up updates" to be mostly what's in SP1. (Just my take on that. Maybe I'm wrong.) My current version seems to perform just fine. As I currently have no use for v. 3.5, I also don't currently need any prerequisite feature support.
I'd like to think my trials and tribulations with n-Lite are all behind me. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to Steely I can't install that security patch for .NET framework either. It says I don't have the SP1 for .NET framework 1.1 and refuses to install and then calls home to mommy to tattle and complain.
Of course, I have SP1. Dell installs .NET framework 1.1 SP1 because something of theirs uses it, I've forgotten what. This is the second Dell I've had since 2003 that it came installed on. I suppose it must be corrupted (.NET 1.1) and thus the SP1 isn't showing up.
Add-Remove programs says I have .NET3 still installed. I don't think so! I got so pissed at .NET3.5 some time ago that I thought I uninstalled all versions except 1.1.
The patch for .NET1.1 SANS SP1 is only for Media Center edtion of XP which I don't have so I don't need a patch at all.
There is a patch for .NET 3.5 on XP but none for .NET 3.0 so I don't need that either.
I just read at Microsoft NG that an earlier hotfix for .NET 1.1 SP1 is at the root of the refusal to install this latest patch. But that is not my problem because I don't have the earlier hotfix (KB928366). -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thanks 1.1 is the only version you're concerned with here, right? You can always track down the 'installation source' (uninstaller) and then execute it manually, if it's there. But a simpler fix may be to just download a new 1.1 installer and run it. That should either fix the current installation, or allow you to then uninstall.
If that doesn't work, there's always Aaron Stebner's tool:

I downloaded NDP1.1SP-KB953297-X86.exe and NDP1.1SP-KB867460-X86.exe Neither one will install. One says cant find the source.
I have never had a problem with updates in 5 years with this computer. What should I do? Thanks |

HnLA @immigrationlaw.com | Of course I did, I spent over an hour on this site and others learning, and trying different things. Tried using the Windows removal tool, other stuff, still would not work.
