VPN PPTP - speeds are extremely slow

hi all, I'm new to this forum and also to VPN but i have picked up a lot on this lately, i do how ever have a problem with file transfer speeds via VPN

---------
i have set up VPN on my vista ultimate pc, i have put the ports in the windows firewall, and set up a static ip and port forwarding on my sweex's router, also set up DDNS on my router as my internet provider changes the ip once a week or so, Makes it easier to connect than trying to get my public ip every time i need to do VPN

the client end is my iphone 3g, that does connect fine,

if i go to the BBC iplayer on my iphone via my VPN that works, (only way i could think of to get BBC iplayer to work over 3g as it is normally restricted).... i can do what ever i like on the internet via VPN and no problems with speed there.

but when using a program on my iphone (netportal), to access my shared files, they will only download to my iphone at 15 Kilobytes per sec

i have also connected to a FTP server from my iphone via VPN and get about 90 Kilobytes per sec down... which is about right for my internet speed.

I'm on Virgin media 20mb
2486 Kilobytes down
92.5 Kilobytes up (not Kilobits)

does anyone have any idea whats going wrong with this....
i hope i have gave enough info, but if not, just ask

thank you all

Googling netportal did not yield any helpful hints what it is.

If by 'shared files' you mean the Microsoft SMB filesystem, yes, it is slow.

sorry, netportal is an app for the iphone to give it ability to show and download files from a vpn network as the iphone does not support that out of the box...

but is there anyway to incress the speed of this SMB thingy

the only firm I have heard of is Riverbed.

Be sitting down before you look at prices.

ok, you warned me, lol, that i think is not the way i shall go,

i think i shall give this one up and try another way

so far, VPN works great for fooling BBC iplayer to think I'm on wifi instead of 3g, and does the trick perfectly

i did however try using a ftp server program on my pc (bulletproof ftp server 2010), now that worked and transferred files at nearly full speed, but i cant stream video files as i could find a way of accessing the ftp server from safari, as the program i had on my iphone to access the ftp server didn't have much video playback function

Has any one got an idea that will allow me to access my files that are on my pc via the internet (like a webpage, or even could i make 1 to do that)

safari on the iphone will stream video files, just need a way of accessing them on safari,

i have used a program called getdropbox, which is cool, its fast and i get 2.5gb free space, but not the best solution as i have to upload files to them first before accessing them on my iphone

thanks all,
