Tests during Digital Voice Install
Ever since I got digital voice with Comcast (new Arris modem) 80% of time I try to upload large video files (35meg) the modem reboots itself during the upload.

It appears to happen after the initial power boost upload (where it uploads really fast) and when the power boost ends is when it normally reboots itself.

This does not happen when I upload 3 or 4 meg files to Flickr.

modem -> router -> computer

I have not tried removing the router yet, because the router worked fine before I got digital voice.

I totally forgot to mention that the error I get in the modem logs is:

Power Supply Telemetry Log - BATTERY MISSING

That is referring to the backup battery in the emta, if it has two ports and one isnt used it will sometimes show this. Otherwise check for a battery and call in to comcast if it is missing

That happened a lot a long time ago with my old motorola surfboard 4200. Did that and also froze when tons of ports where opened up. (edonkey back then.) My Linksys cable modem after that (v2) did the same too. (along with slow speeds). Both times, ended up being the modem.

Am i reading your screenshot right? Upstream at 33 dBmv? Isn't the Recommended upstream signal levels +35 dBmV to +52 dBmV? Might not be your issue though. Do you have a battery at all? When i had digital voice, i had an older modem with slots for 2 batteries. Maybe yours has 2 battery openings too? The newer modems i saw had only 1 battery opening.

Look at that it is missing a battery. Does that matter?

they only come with one battery...your fine....as far as the uploading goes, is this different sites/ftps? or just one?

I only upload to Vimeo and YouTube and they both have the same reboot issue.

Smaller files like the 3meg photos that I uploaded for this topic had no issue.

i would say get a standalone modem...more often if your a power user, have seperates...for some reason the emtas seem to have issues with high levels of data sent through them...not to the extent of the SMC's, but it cant hurt...also have heard of increases of speed to versus using the emta

OK, I have an answer to what is going on with my rebooting modem when uploading large files.

It happen 3 times in a row this morning so i called comcast and they said that my digital voice modem only supports 7 meg uploads!!!!!

I guess it is time to get rid of digital voice and get my old modem back.

They also told me that DOCSIS 3.0 is available in my area now, but they couldn't tell me what I needed to do to get it.

Actual this is totally not true since I have uploaded 29MB files without a problem, but my last video of 73MB won't work, perhaps she might to say the upload limit is 70MB.

I could see an upload limit with certain software, such as the php 2 mb limit but not with hardware. The data isnt stored onthe eMTA as it only passes the data along. I will check around but I have uploaded Linux ISO's without a hitch.

EDIT
Not able to locate anything from Arris or anyone that can reinforce this claim, sounds like they may have been confused.

I tried the same video file to the same site (Vimeo) and it uploaded fine after it had failed 3 times 2 hours ago (around 8am). Perhaps it is a time of day network congestion issue that causes it to reboot.

Also I just called comcast back and talked to another tech and that person said they have never heard about that before. Perhaps the first tech i talked with was confused between speed uploads and file size upload limitations.

There seems to be an issue lately with some modems and long uploads. My SB5120 logs stuff like:
2009-10-23 12:05:37 5-Warning TSM: TxError WatchDog - Restart Upstream
2009-10-23 12:05:37 5-Warning HAL: Overcoming Tx Error (reseting the US - DMA)

Other modems may be having similar issues, but don't log it. Too many errors over a certain time period, and it may decide to reboot.

I was trying to figure out if it was a time of day issue, but after many failed attempts to upload a 30meg video file I have concluded that it has nothing to do with traffic congestion.

I am thinking of getting the Ooma device (going back to my old modem) and dropping Comcast Voice if I can't get this resolved soon.

Problem solved, a Comcast tech came out and provide me with a new and different Arris modem and it fixed the issue.
