1 edit | Eastlink is now DNS Hijacking!
A couple of days ago I noticed that mistyped urls were no longer bringing up blank pages but were coming up with not found eastlink branded pages.
With a little digging I found out an opt out option to which I chose to do. Fast forward a couple of days....I noticed I could no longer remote desktop from my laptop to my desktop and computer names were resolving through to search.eastlink.ca.
Eastlink, bless their hearts, has decided to dabble in DNS hijacking. I've now opted out twice from this, it's nice that they haven't informed any of their customers to what they are doing.
So if you're wondering why your computer names no longer resolve properly, you know now!

To opt out: »searchmanager.eastlink.ca/optout···ink&lang |

| Your completely wrong on the whole "DNS hijacking" Sorry but you need to use wiki or something before you say stuff like this. Let me explain:
This is not DNS hijacking, all it simply is "supposed" to be instead of getting pages saying "this site/server could not be found" Or other pages (microsoft bing seems to be the most common) when you mistakenly type in the wrong name like: www.outube.com it will give you a list of most popular sites which youtube will definitely be one of them.
Why don't you also make a post about Google and Microsoft bing hijacking you pc with software add-ons? All Eastlink is doing is controlling it right from their server/network, and that is nothing near hijacking. |

| This is not software hijacking, trojans or anything of the sort.
Earlier in the week I noticed they had taken over mistyped urls and saw the eastlink logo at the top. I looked for the option to opt out and I did. I thought nothing more about it until I noticed that I could no longer access my desktop via remote desktop and VPN stopped working. Bringing up a command prompt window and pinging those machines got me replies through search.eastlink.ca and not the usual 192.168.X.X reply.
It is a form of hijacking when internal network name queries no longer function correctly. When I opted out for a second time, I could then ping my desktop correctly and get a reply from something other than 199.101.28.10. Must I post a screenshot of how bad of an implementation Eastlink did of this? |

@eastlink.ca | reply to acrufox Well to be honest I do know good and bad stories of it. It is something new and trust me they are trying to work out the bugs, they recently just came out with this new idea only a few weeks ago, like anything new, bugs will need to be worked out. |

Just rebooting the modem resets your opt out, I hope they tie the opt out to mac-id's so it's a one time thing. |
