I believe that FiOS TV Central displays VOD offerings (can't recall if you have to log in for that or not) and while I haven't checked lately, Comcast displayed stuff too (for non-customers). Not saying that either site is particular good at displaying the info but it's there if you're willing to look through it...

Plus why limit yourself, it is good to be able to surf the guide and always have something good to watch. I think by buying a la cart and then having a lot less channels, you will end up having less to choose from. Plus it really puts 'work' into researching what shows are on what channels and when they are coming on, in order to decide when to order a channel a la cart.

Some of this is incorrect. MSNBC is all HD. Turner Classic Movies has literally zero HD.

I don't know specifics so I could be wrong, but I would guess BBC America has less than 10 hours of HD programming per week.

Also, I think the FOX 2010 launches are a viable subject in this kind of thread. Reason is that Verizon isn't adding anything until 2010 anyway. FOX, who are not a cable company competitor, should be able to strike a deal with Verizon much faster than Time Warner or Comcast. We could see FOX's channels up first.

It doesn't say it's coming to Fios, it's just coming out. They already don't carry Starz West which is available. For that matter it was also announced that EWTN will be going HD in December, will we get that? TBN has been in HD for a long time and we still don't get it.

If channels aren't in the AVS Forum list then they do not currently have an HD feed.

Re the topic: I have no additional suggestions for HD channels to add, but would (on a slightly OT note) like to see fuller support of AFD -- so we folks who haven't yet been lucky enough to get HDTVs wouldn't have to see the crappy framing currently used when SD channels air 16x9 material without letterboxing. For example, the people who produce my favorite broadcast-channel show apparently decided this summer that every one of its viewers now can see a full 16x9 display, based on how much stuff is now happening at the edges of (or even apparently out of sight of) my pedestrian 4x3 display. In the season opener, they even had the titles going off-screen for 4x3.

[To clarify: I have to watch the broadcast-channel show on an SDTV with an SD box, because my wife is watching her favorite show, in full-16x9, on the HD DVR at the same time. Neither of us have time to watch either show at another time, and she likes to be able to switch channels during the show's commercials, so I can't simply record my show off an HD channel on the DVR and watch it in full 16x9 later. Keepin' peace in the family, y'know... :-) Besides, it still wouldn't excuse the lack of AFD support even if my own particular issue was resolved.]

Of course, if it's to be assumed that the benefits of all-digital TV are for only those with 16x9 displays and that we who don't have it should shut up and live with non-letterboxed versions of 16x9 programming, then I guess I missed that memo.

I have a HDTV, two actually. And I'm leaning more towards supporting Onedollar side of the argument. My family, in general, watches only a handful of stations: locals, Discovery, SyFy, Lifetime (the wife), and ESPN, plus a few more for the kids (Nick, Noggin, etc) Occasionally Spike, FX, TBS, etc might slip in that list if they have a movie on that I want to see.

I don't watch nor have any interest in HLN in SD, so giving me a HD version isn't going to get me to watch. I already have CNN, Fox, and CNBC. One of those likely has the same politically slanted news that HLN has.

#2-6 in your list is more niche programming. I'm sure that some people would love to have them in HD. I'm sure many people never watch the SD versions of them so they don't care about the HD versions either. I fit into that category. I'm not real interested in another price increase for channels that I'm not going to watch. If I had to choose between adding those channels with a price increase and not carrying them to keep the same price, I'd chose to not carry them. Fortunately for Verizon and unfortunately for me, I probably won't be given a choice in the matter.

As to Starz West, isn't that primarily just a time-shifted copy of Starz East? Again, nice to have if you want it, but I don't know how much of a demand there is for it.
