Slow speeds after upgrading to 12 or 18 meg internet | XP OS

I started out with 12 MBs in September and then was talked into 18 MBs this month. I used the Speakeasy test before and after the change and saw no difference in speed.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have never seen a download speed greater than 17.8 MBs, upload is a little less than 1.5MBs no matter which city I try.

Once the free offer to upgrade to 18MBs in over, I will drop it.

You won't see greater than 18megs, 17.8 is the max you'll see. Same with the upload it will be just below 1.5. The upload is the same on the 12 & 18.

I have a problem where I'm only getting 5 megs from multiple servers on my 12 meg connection on my XP laptop. All the Vista laptops are running at the full 11.5 megs. I tried the DR TCP advice without any success. Also, this 5 meg limit occurs on a another older xp laptop also. It looks like windows XP is limiting download speeds somehow?

Anyone have a suggestion to fix this?

Did you restart the pcs after you applied the Dr tcp settings?

Sure did and also the RG.

I'd start a new thread. In that thread post what the tweak test results showed from here. What do you have the RWIN set to? Lastly are you sure you changed the RWIN on the correct adapter? Sometimes Dr. TCP has drop down for various adapters.

I used the same RWIN recommendations for my Vista machine and used that on my XP laptop and that fixed the problem. The RWIN settings for XP did not work.

I'm only on the 6 mb/s plan. Here are some speed test results (all with Chicago servers):

speakeasy: 5707/946
speedtest: 5710/950
at&t test: 5451/952

Yeah, when I was on 6 Mbps, Speakeasy was great for me too. Apparently they MAY have issues over 10 Mbps in the Bay Area at least?

I just ran the at&t one again, using the Chicago server, just to double-check... here is the results:
Download = 4.750 Mbps
Upload = 1.488 Mbps

And this using the San Francisco server:
Download = 4.769 Mbps
Upload = 1.459 Mbps

Pretty lame. I think that at&t site may have only been set up to support their standard DSL (as that only went up to about 5.5 Mbps real world anyway).

In contrast, here's my speedtest.net results:

I use speedtest.net also but just tried the AT&T speed test. Noticed the following disclaimer on the report.

"Thank you for using AT&T's Speedtest! Please note that our Speedtest estimates your upstream and downstream speeds for Internet services of up to 6 Mbps. If you subscribe to a service of greater than 6 Mbps, then your Speedtest results may not be as accurate. Speedtests for services of greater than 6 Mbps are currently under development, so check back soon!"

So by their own admission the AT&T test does not work for speeds above 6MB.

Yes, a real "Duh!" moment for me. Sorry.

But I bet there's other people who didn't bother reading that, so this is good of you to point out and for all of us to note.

This reminds me about a story I heard (I think from a teacher) about the test that was handed out that had instructions at the very top instructing to turn the test in and leave class (college). The majority of students supposedly didn't see that, so unnecessarily took the test.

Great reminder about instructions and reading, for crying out loud. Good grief!

JNG can you post the settings that you used to fix this?

Have you tried dl some large files and does it maintain your thruput ?

I had the 12meg and it was impossible to dl a file over a gig without constant bouncing and ended up around 100Kb at the end.
Tried an 8GB file and it leveled out after about 10 minutes to 300Kb.

It starts off at 1.42MB then after about 20 seconds it is bouncing from 900KB to 300KB then another 20 seconds its 300KB to 1 KB.

they just gave me free 18MB to try and its worse.

BUT the stupid speed test show wow speeds.

Are these wired or wireless?

I get a full 10-11MBS on all my XP boxes.

Note that all the interfaces in the RG are bridged (HPNA, ethernet, WiFi). I have a Cisco AP so I shut off HPNA and Wifi in my RG.

well I got bootsed to 18M for free for 6 months and I got to spend this weekend trying to find out why my speeds sucked.

I was dl a 1G and an 8G file from my work that is more than fast enough to allow 14000 workers to serf the net...OH WAIT we are looking for information

Well after testing and changing settings in XP and programs and everything else I could think of I switched to 7 pro. SAME thing.

finally it started working....I am getting a solid 2.2MB dl speed.
I still don't know what is going on but I was surprised when it just started working....this is the strangest experience with a service I have ever seen.

You'll never really get OVER the amount of what your paying for on speedtests (which is normal). Try www.pingtest.net and see your line QUALITY rather than speed, you never know if there is a line issue that requires a technician so it never hurts to check.

You speedtest results are typical considering dsl works like a heartbeat (keeps going and going and going and the same moderate speed your paying for) VS. cable where your speedtest results are either extremely high or extremely low, rarely any in between.

lots of good info here for network system tweaks »www.speedguide.net/ beyond that all you can do from your end on the hardware side is it to make sure your hardware/wires are new and have a good connection. You can call them, but all they will say is that connections may very. It's not DSL it's Cable there is no phone line connecting to the U-Verse box. It's VDSL which is fiber to the node so it's going to very in speeds.
