| Is this modem to old for 10mb/sec down?
Westell 6100 Model number: E90-610014-06 Rev. C
I searched and saw a post referring to the fact that maybe the "E" revision is first to handle the higher speeds. Is there a definite answer to this? Since increasing my up from 1.5 down to 10 down my speeds are now only around 500 kb/sec to around 1 mb/sec. However, my uploads have increased as advertised. They are actually higher than my download speed. I'm 2/2 in having a centurytel representative not answer this question. It would save me a lot of headache and frustration if my modem is outdated.
Here are my Transceiver Stats if it helps to see them. They show the correct speeds. BTW: I get the same results using only my modem to connect to the PC as I do using my modem/d-link router combo.
Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: not defined Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 12476 894 Margin (dB) 13.5 -1795.6 Line Attenuation (dB) 24.5 16.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 22.9 12.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been fighting this since Tuesday and would love to get it all behind me!
My last test through the centurytel speed test with modem only is 496 kbps up and 757 kbps down. |

| My understanding is what you have stated, revision E or later. Although the sync rate appears correct, the line mode is showing not defined. If you are "renting" the modem from Centurylink, I think they will exchange it for you. -- Ofallon, Mo Weather St. Peters, Mo Weather |

| You're correct in that the Revision "E" are ADSL2+ capable. What seems to be your issue is the Westell is not reporting the correct upload margins (-1795.6), therefore you're upload appears completely saturated, which affects your download speed (just the nature of Asynchronous DSL when either egress or ingress is maxed out, it affects the other side). It's a known issue with the Westell's not reporting upload stats, but it's a completely random thing. I would try to have it swapped out if you can. |

| Thank you for the quick replies.
I'm a weekend gamer by nature and keep a clean, smooth and fast running machine as a general rule. It became frustrating when the tech wouldn't bother finding the information about my Revision. He just wanted to run tests on my modem, which I was at work making that impossible. My email didn't work either. They basically said my filters, or spyware were corrupting my computer. I don't blame them really as I do the tech stuff on computers at my job and I'm continually fighting junk on computers.
Again, thank you. I am "renting" this modem. I now realize it was a huge mistake when I told the lady I upgraded with that I didn't think my modem was all that old. Always Always Always accept the latest and greatest! LOL |

| You may even consider not renting a modem, and purchasing your own. There's a good chance that even a new Westell (they're still using that revision btw) will still have the same random upload issue....I've seen it more times than I care to admit. |

| Yep. I kept my Westell as a spare, but use a Netopia for my main modem. Got it used, upgraded to the latest firmware, and all is well! -- The goal of the broadcast engineer is to get all the meters on the transmitter to go as far to the right as possible!! |

@centurytel.net | My rent fee will go up twice what is was. It is now over $3 a month. I thought about buying my own modem, but was afraid I'd have issues again if for some reason they had centurytel(centurylink) specific firmware. |

| reply to MarkoR7 Upgrading to 10 meg down has been a nightmare. Finally got a new modem which says the right line mode and stuff, but my speed is absolutely horrible. Through modem/router combo or through only the modem nothing changes. I tried unplugging every phone line in the house as well and trying that method.
One thing I've noticed on this modem is the red internet light keeps coming on every once in a while. I can still surf, but it is on. In the westell control panel, it also won't connect to the PPP. Any other suggestions appreciated.

| little more info.
I'm currently back on my old modem. The other one would connect me for a while, although slow, then the power, ethernet, DSL, and Internet lights would all be on. At that point I am froze from any internet at all. It's done this about 4 times. I had to restart and push the reset button each time. |
