1. Call google from my phone
2. Press 2 to make a call
3. Type in the number
vs calling from the cell
1. Find # in speed dial and hit call

Which is why the Google Voice app was "not approved" by Apple/AT&T for the iPhone. You wouldn't have to call Google, you could call directly from the application itself.

| Re: Still a PITA Well, and this is a clunky first attempt by a content company that wants to take over the service portion of the calling and IM equation. Under truly open networks there will be other companies eager to try the same thing.
If, like my PC, my phone ultimately becomes a device with a neutral OS, where I can put any application on it I'd like, and use the bandwidth I pay for for whatever I'd like, why would I be stuck with AT&T or Verizon's voice dialing mechanism?
I'm not sure people really see the ramifications of what's been started here, but they will. | |

I never realized how much power AT&T truly has over our government until now.

| | | | I do this already. I have a Nokia E75 running Symbian OS and I have Fring installed and setup with a SIP account.
When I dial a number the phone asks me if this should be a cell call or a SIP (data) call.
My data plan with AT&T is $15 a month "unlimited" data.
The Symbian OS allows me to use my device in ways that would make the death star implode if they knew.
For example I'm also using a program called JoikuSpot to share the 3G connection between several laptops at once as it turns my phone into "ad-hoc router". Think of it as tethering on steroids.
Like Karl says, pick your device, programs and service separately and enjoy! | |

i have a jb'ed iphone running 3.0.1 and i have the "gv mobile" application. because my phone is paid by my employer, i really just leverage google voice with my incoming did from callcentric. i have unlimited (well, its like a 3000 minute cap) from callcentric for inbound calls. rather than burn 1.9cents/min on an outbound termination, i simply fire up the iphone app, tap the number (can use my personal address book as well) and have it ring my voip line. one extra step, but in some respects its faster than me dialing it myself using the ip-phone.

I use my GV for business. So people Call me...inbound. I get a huge amount of calls...in bound.
All i need to to is answer the phone...talk as long as i like...and i only have 400 minutes a month plan.
