Obama wants YOU to help stop cyber attacks

Uncle Sam wants you for the war on cyber crime

»tech.yahoo.com/news/pcworld/2009···security
U.S. President Barack Obama has urged Americans to help guard against cyberattacks in a first-of-its-kind video published on the White House Web site.

He urged people to follow three basic security principles:

--Keep security and software systems up-to-date and beware of suspicious e-mail,

--Always know who you are dealing with online,

--And never give out your personal or financial information until you verify the recipient is legitimate.

I've been wondering why the Government didn't try this approach before.... appealing to people and educating Joe Sixpack to help protect their machines --- and the rest of ours as a result.

Malware these days is getting nasty. I can't fault the administration for this effort.

what % of the american population actually understands how to keep computer security software up to date? and an even better question, what % of the american population with computers actually knows if they have security software on their computer?

People can learn to drive a car and pass a test to drive. Then they can learn how to secure their computers. Can't pass a test, then you can't attach your computer to the network.

hmm. i'd be curious to see what companies like Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, TWC, etc have to say about that. i'd imagine they would either lose a lot of customers because of the test that the customer would have to pass, or all of their customers would magically pass the test.

it also makes me wonder how short of a hold time there would be waiting for customer service then also.

Let's require a license for everything, shall we? This is getting ridiculous. I'm all for protecting our computers, but requiring a test or a license to get on the internet is simply a crazy idea... While we're at it, let's also require a test for people who want to use toasters, irons, and all other kitchen equipment. Let's make sure we all are licensed to use our garage door openers as well. Oh, and let's give licenses to people who pass a test on locking and unlocking their door. Silly...

Now you have to run their crappy 100MB ram hogging anti virus which scans all files on the fly, and keep your IE at the latest major version (I never do, the older the IE, the faster more efficient it is, since the old version has stopped getting patches, I use FF, and use IE for only IE only sites, which are very rare nowadays). Also they scan your system for P2P apps, no difference between legal and illegal P2P.

Next thing you know, they will silently scan your computer to make sure you have licensed software and report you to the BSA, or scan your computer for islamic terrorism or to find out who "raped" a white blond head cheerleader at the last frat party, or they will scan you for what they think is child pornography (your hentai feature minors, bestiality or gore?). You signed your rights away when you installed the babysitting program.

Someone will say install Linux, but thats besides the point, thats like saying, if you don't want to be racial profiled by the police don't be black or hispanic, go do what Michael Jackson did. Sooner or later, an administrator will say to block Linux since it can't be "effectivly secured". Oh wait, someone already did that.

Drivers licenses are the same thing. Since its a "privilege" and not a "right" and you "voluntarily" got one, the constitution doesn't apply to you. In states where there is no stop and identify law ( »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_and_I···statutes ), you loose that right by being a driver (yes, lets have amnesia and forget the car has a license plate and an owner and if its stolen the cop can check on their computer instantly).

The better solution is deal with offenders, not the innocent. Just plain sue the residential IP owners who are sending spam. If I prank call you and harass you, I'm going to jail (if the lazy DAs every cared to prosecute anything but the innocent and what the media will plaster on the TV to get them cred for their governor run) »www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/47/223.html#a_1 . Why should any residential internet connections have an open port 25?

I have a good idea, can't we prevent rapes of women by saving sperm and putting it in a sperm bank who will only release by government permit, then castrate or penectomy all men, when they hit puberty? Thats a flawless way to prevent rape of women! </sarcasm>

When people get spam lawsuits like they get RIAA lawsuits, suddenly its serious business, and for the people who say time is money, spam lawsuits are money, maybe you should rethink the time/computer education part. If I run someone over with a car, I don't just keep driving, I get sued and held accountable.

Microsoft should do their part and make Windows Home an internet appliance/semi-closed walled garden, like an iPhone. Partner with ISPs to include a Windows Home subscription in the internet connection. Maybe call the product "Windows Web". Wasn't Software As a Service and cloud computing the hottest thing since the internet 2 years ago?

Consumers would love if all the normal Windows Apps ran on a "managed platform", with no viruses, worms, trojans, keyloggers, and with guaranteed updates and no ability to screw up the registry and that all the apps in the "Microsoft Store" were crypto signed and reviewed. Open source would have to have a small ($10) fixed fee to pay for the anti-virus/malware, crypto signing, and updating parts (under GPL "You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee." clause).

Anyone who has "time" to learn anything or is competent will buy Windows Professional, Windows Professional will not be the default option in retail/internet/direct sales. Windows Professional is a fixed one time fee like a normal OS. Windows Home would be a subscription.

Putting a drivers license on an internet connection will cause the safety police to go down the big brother path. And only outlaws have internet connection. What about VPNs, tunneling, Virtual Machine, wifi cracking, social engineering, security breaches and worms (turn PC into access point giving unrestricted anonymous internet).

The sheep should be pushed or force educated (Windows SAS/Web/dumb terminal is default, professional is an upgrade, those who know to get professional will, the sheep will choose the default and get Windows SAS and its cheaper in the very short term too) towards PC security/internet appliance/internet drivers license, not a taser shock collar put on the sheep and then they get zapped until they comply with the master's wishes.

The sheep want a cable box, not a Big Ugly Dish with 3 different decryption boxes and a chart of aiming coordinates. Why does Best Buy, Dell, and Microsoft only sell them Big Ugly Dishes? They want people to buy a new PC/laptop every 6 months/every time it gets a virus and toss the old one in the trash? (its cheaper to buy new than give to Geek Squad or a typical computer repairman who charges auto mechanic hourly rates).

I met someone who did as well. Explaining to her that she now needed to inform her credit card company about it, and also needed to make sure that he information wasn't used for anything malicious before the company could update it was an interesting experience.

Now she will never get antivirus software again.

the most interesting thing that I found out about the whole "antivirus 2009" software fiasco was that it was a ploy by the russian mafiaa to extort money from idiots

That's why companies like Microsoft basically enable auto update by default. Can you blame them?

It involves a little more than that since they use stolen credit card information to purchase new domain names and then use these to sucker in more people. All of this is beyond just stealing your credit card information so this can be sold or used for other miscellaneous purchases. All in all, it's an impressive scam.
