| Rising latency, and disconnects
Not an experienced computer user compared to most but read some posts and did some tests.
Seems a couple of months ago I could connect to a Dallas server and get a ping of 60 at worst. Now I connect to New York servers at a constant 130. Last week it was 95.
I've disconnected all my phones and still have the problem.
Pinging yahoo is a constant 130 ms. Tried resetting router and still the same problems.
Everyone morning before the family gets up I'll be on the internet and randomly be disconnected at least once and hour.
Could both problems be related?
I don't know how to interpret the numbers in data errors section of my 2701hg-b 2 wire.
Any help would be appreciated. |

All my phone filters and set right and haven't changed in the past months. Could one of them just go haywire randomly? |

| reply to iothar Getting rid of the uncancelled echo is a good thing, but what are the current downstream connect rate and noise margin figures?
It's apparent that you have Pro service [the 512 kbps upstream figure is the tip-off], but you were only connecting at 2240 kbps downstream instead of the usual 3008 kbps.
The reason you weren't connecting at 3008 is that your downstream noise margin was only 10dB at 2240 kbps. At least some of the higher latency could be the result of your line being placed in interleave mode [I believe this is set automatically if a connection drops frequently] at AT&Ts end. Interleave mode has error correction to compensate for poor line quality, but results in increased latency.
If there are significant differences between line stats at different outlets in your house, you may want to drag a long extension cord and your gateway outside and connect them directly to the test jack outside. »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How to check modem stats, synch rates & speeds from test jack at the NID.
If the stats outside are considerably better than inside, you can either install a 'home run' or choose the inside jack that gives you the best stats.
When, after any and all relocating/rewiring, you're satisfied you connection is OK, post in the AT&T Direct forum for help from an AT&T tech [or see if MrFixitSC can look at things for you]. |

| reply to iothar Looks MUCH better now, except for the 'Impulse noise protection' and the 'Delay of latency path'. 30dB signal-to-noise downstream at 3008 kbps is a very good figure.
