MTU setting on 2701HG_B

The MTU is set to 1492 and I'm wondering what will happen if I set it to 1500.

Well that depends. Could be nothing or it could mess you up pretty bad. It depends on what else you have on your network that might be sensitive to a particular MTU. By default move MS OS' will use whatever the DHCP server puts out, but that can easily be overridden. If you have some other devices, they might not be as flexible.

IMHO if you're trying to get better performance out of your modem with the extra 8 bytes, don't bother.

If you are really bored or curious, then I'd suggest you start here: »www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=190 and read all about it. Have fun.

Change the mtu to 1500 you'll get to judge for yourself what effect it has

PPPoE has an 8 byte header, so its maximum mtu is 1492. Setting it higher than that (if it even lets you) is not going to help anything, and might even make things break if you try to run a server that needs to be accessed from the internet (if the server does not like fragmented packets).
