In-depth analysis of line stats

Hey !

First off, I am not new to DSL and its voodoo-like behavior; especially on marginal lines. Basically, I would like some constructive feedback concerning my current line stats.

Considering the high line attenuation @ 67 dB, is it normal that the upload is somewhat significantly lower @ 31.5 dB ? I know the upstream channel uses a lower frequency and that attenuation is much less, but both values seem really far off.

My current setup involves a Corning ADSL/VDSL POTS splitter (provided by Bell) at the demarc to eliminate my internal wiring as a degrading factor to an already degraded line. Question : Is my setup ok ? Are there any comments concerning it ?

Concerning the demarc. I changed the wire yesterday and cleaned the contacts with a fine grit sandpaper to remove the slight tarnish of the copper due to oxidation. For some reason, most demarcs are installed right next to those electric panels (makes sense, DSL didn't exit in the seventies... ). It can certainly be a source of noise, so what can I do to reduce that interference to a minimum ?

I am interested in experimenting with Bicephale See Profile's take on adding RF chokes as a way to further stabilize my connection. This is where I need help. I have to determine which spot would benefit the most by adding an RF choke. My goal is to be able to fully use the 1728/640 profile without having to be put on interleave. Usually, it can be done during the winter months with no problem. For some reason, the connection is quite stable today. Yesterday was awful though.

Thanks for looking !

While I commend you for your prudence, and that is indeed a fine setup, the effects on your line from minor oxidation of copper contacts are dwarfed by the 4km distance to your CO.

You seem to be reasonably adept at home improvement, so I recommend you improve your DSL situation by moving your home.

Wouldn't that be nice ! I am just trying to tweak this connection to the best that I can while waiting for Bell to complete their remote installation on the OPI that serves my line (see »What is Bell planning on doing here ? for reference).

That's simply fantastic! How do you intend to collect statistical data?

Does the tool by Guspaz allow you to use 'DMT' in "Diagnosis" mode?...

I gave it a shot a few days ago, but it didn't seem to properly gather and record the information. I will try again.

Perhaps 'RouterStats-Lite v5.4 (2009-Oct-8)' will do but i'm
worried: can it also record Error Rate aka "noise" values?...

If not you could try the full version and run two instances
of 'RouterStats': the 1st one to record the SNR margin, etc.
and then another to read the error count from the "Training
History" page (illustrated below)...

You're crossing the power at a 90 so that's fine. All I can suggest is cat. 5 from the protector to the pots splitter.
Move the protector away form the panel as there is slack in the BSW from what I see.
Then shield the cat. 5 where it crosses (tin foil) the power if you want to get anal.

That's one amazing line for that kind of attenuation level! That 724 maximum attainable upstream speed does look kind of odd though. But for once, we cant blame the upstream issue on IKNS!

They might let you have 2496/640 interleaved but you might have to fight for it.

Not sure at the moment if I would want higher speeds at the expense of ping time. If I am able to boost the SNR a bit more or at least greatly reduce the number of CRC errors, I will be happy until they transfer my line to a remote.

I will try and replace the wiring from the protector to the splitter with cat5 tomorrow and will post the result. I might even throw a RF choke "à la Bicephale" to see what happens.

Unfortunately, i doubt it would be practical to evaluate the
usefulness of RF Choking by monitoring your DS SNR Margin.

This animation suggests how to configure 'RouterStats' (full)
to also monitor two Error Rate counters thru customization:

OrbMT on D-Link DSL 2320B, Bicephale, 2009-Feb-22

Once set correctly you should be able to obtain this result:

Sorry i don't own a 2Wire so i can't give advice as to what
to enter in the "URL to router 'stats' page" field. What i do
know is that you'll most likely have to run two instances of
the 'RouterStats'/'RouterStats-Lite' tool(s) in order to get a
long-term record with both the SNR Margin and Error Rate...

By the way, i think your exceptional situation in terms of the
Attenuation level may finally answer this old question of mine:

It seems the 2Wire is a potential winner... Thank you!!!

My mostly postive experiences on my "old" line tend to say that the 2wire 2700/2701 modems might only hold this attenuation vs maximum sync rate when it comes to the dowstream side. I found that the upstream performance was lackluster. There were some days when my 2wire modem was driven nuts by line conditions and would perform far worse than an broadcom or ar7 based modems. However, there were other days when the 2wire would appear to outperform any other modem that I had by about a 200 to 500 Kbps difference in max rates(downstream).

Hummm...

Maybe one must account for operating conditions:

  Mauricio:  1728 Kbps @ 67 dB Attn.
 DSLRocker:  6016 Kbps @ 11 dB Attn.

Yeah, ironic that I'm speaking about "marginal lines"/long loops, isn't it? Unfortunately/fortunately, the ability for my high attenuation/crappy line experiments has been destroyed by Bell's generosity!

I'm sure you can fix this using a couple 50' rolls
of flat telephone extensions combined with the
cheapest lamp dimmer you can find...

The problem with the 2Wire modem is that its web interface requires javascript for it to run properly. RouterStats doesn't seem to support it, therefore it is hard to gain access to the gold mine of stats the modem supplies. With no javascript, I cannot input the password to access those pages. I have tried removing the password, but the router says I cannot disable. Even the login feature in RouterStats doesn't seem to work when I input the username and password.

I will modify my demarc setup and get back to RouterStats later.

With RouterStats, I've found that you will be limited to the non-mdc pages.

...and i'm not really well acquainted with it, i'm afraid...

I am trying to make it work by using »192.168.2.1/xslt?PAGE=J43 (2Wire DSL Line Diagnostics). and »192.168.2.1/xslt?PAGE=J45 ( 2Wire DSM Elements)
