The essential purpose of any story-driven RPG and the fantasy genre in general is to pull the player into the game world.

The Baldur's Gate series, for example, had expansive outdoor areas (which encouraged exploration), day/night cycles, weather, and an epic soundtrack. You'd often run into wildlife or random travelers and other characters. These things alone made the world seem dynamic and alive, and greatly improved suspension of disbelief. You often had to think (rather than strictly fight) your way through dungeons, and you never knew quite what to expect. By contrast, DA:O looks and feels like a series of static sets stitched together entirely for the purpose of driving the main story forward and little else. There are few interesting characters outside of the party NPCs, and almost nothing remarkable about the world itself (that you can actually see, anyhow--the in-game codex paints a vibrant picture that doesn't pan out within the action of the game). For example, I found the various Romanesque (Tevinter Imperium?) ruins scattered throughout some of the game areas to be intriguing--why weren't those explored in greater detail? Little things like that go a long way towards bringing a fantasy world to life.
--
It's only hubris if I'm wrong.

Irenic posted : I just finished it (first run through), here are my thoughts.

I loved the story, characters, dialogue, voice acting, art, etc. The combat gets very repetitive, in the last quarter of the game I turned it down to 'Easy' since I got sick of micro-managing every battle for hours on end with the pause function. I also cannot see how one can play through without at least one mage since the game throws giant hordes at you which cannot be controlled without a lot of freezing spells.

That being said, the grinding aspects are still worth putting up with for what I found to be an absolutely great and engrossing story, one where there is no clear happy ending, there must be some level of compromise by the end. In that respect, it's quite powerful.

It's quite cheap now, so I highly recommend it!

I'll be looking forward to the sequel. :)

Edit: As far as performance goes, it was nearly flawless on my E8400 + ATI 4850 at 1080p resolution, so it's fairly forgiving.

Dentist posted : I found this game to be pretty "meh"

1) Battles consisted almost entirely of monster closets. Open a door, monsters rush at you, rinse repeat. It felt horribly linear and you could pretty much guarantee that there was a pack of monsters behind every door.

2) I was never convinced my actions had any real effect on the world. Being good = more allies to pick from and some buffs. Beyond that, for a game with choices, the whole experience was too linear and scripted and the only impact was on who did/didn't die. You might deviate from the story arc for a side quest, but the main plot is clearly on rails.

3) Plot/ending - "Demon's are coming, let's go kill them after we gather forces". There are no memorable enemies that are going to come out of this one, nor was anything particular memorable along the way. A few hours in I found myself bored with the chat trees, mashing escape to get to the choices and then picking the obviously "correct" answer.

4) Gameplay - balance was way off. Mages in particular are horribly strong. Cone of cold, sleep basically leads to stun lock. AI also tends to fail and will run off to attack some random enemy unless you constantly babysit with the pause button. Felt more like a RTS (select unit, select action) with a pause button than a dynamic living game. Unintersting gameplay combine with uninteresting plot = unintersting game. Micro-managing the tactics trees was like creating macros so the game plays itself.

5) Autosave every 2 minutes. No risk or challenge, just an exercise in trial and error.

What would have made this game worth a 9+ rating:
1) Plot - something more interesting than "The demon's are coming". Reading through the codex between boring fights and boring chat trees doesn't equate to an interesting plot.

2) Multiplayer - Secret of Mana proved that co-op RPGs are amazing and easily done. Playing this with 3 friends and real-time combat would forgive all other flaws. You'd have to chop back on travel/chat trees which would be a good thing.

Overall this game seems overhyped for what you actually get out of it. I found myself completing it for the sake of completing it (see: Assassin's Creed 1) and will not be coming back for seconds due to the forced linearity of the plot. Being a twat and killing everyone instead of being helpful will still require dungeon crawling, monster closets, and an uninspiring final boss.
