[NEWS] Get ready to change the way you dial in CT.

if you have been under a rock for the last 6 months, here is your official notification...

"To complete local calls, the new dialing procedure requires callers to dial area code + telephone number. This means that all local calls in Connecticut that are currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using area code + telephone number."

"Beginning November 14, 2009, you must use the new dialing procedure for all local calls in Connecticut."

I think with the cell phone so prevalent, this is hardly the brain buster it would have been 10-15 years ago. What I REALLY hate is that within the same area code, some numbers are 7 dial and some are 10 dial. How do you know the difference?

There won't be any difference. Everything will be dialed with area code + phone number. 7-digit dialing won't work after the transition date.

if it is a long distance number in your area code, you will still have to dial the 1 before the area code + telephone number. for example, calling from Hartford to Mystic is long distance in the 860 area code. you have to dial a 1 before dialing the area code + telephone number. but dialing Norwich to Mystic is local and only requires the area code + telephone number. the number 1 is not needed to make the call nor will be accepted and youo will get a 'denial' from your carrier.

Basically just like 7-digit dialing, but with 10-digit dialing.

I already dial 10 digits with VOIP, so it's not a big deal to me.

There have actually been 10-digit-dialed local calls for several years in the Hartford area, since Hartford can call Meriden locally. You dial 203-xxx-xxxx without the '1'.

It wasn't long ago that folks in New Milford and Sherman could dial eachother with just five digits. Instead of '354', we could dial '4' and then the four-digit number. That was in 1970. Ten digit dialing would not go over well if we still had rotary dials.

Not that long ago to you is 40 years ago. That's 30% of the time the telephone has even been in existence.

Same here. I am so used to dialing 10 digits I do it out of habit with any number.

I'm on Ooma, when I dial 7 digits 203 is automatically assumed. Most VOIP services let you have a 7 digit dial plan.

Personally I like my monthly bill ($0). It beats my old AT&T bill ($45).

Ooma you say. Hmm.... Might have to look into that. I'm considering Comcast's $20 for 12 months ISP anyway. Gotta pinch pennies.

I have Cox VOIP dirt cheap better than AT&T/SBC rip off days. I remember the days where you had to rent the phone you use to dial monthly and get charged for each phone outlet in your own house based on how many phones you had own. Glad those days are over!

With my Vtech DECT6 and 5x cordless phones that only uses one jack makes it ideal! I just seen they have one that uses bluetooth and if you have a cellular phone that has bluetooth, you could have your Vtech DECT6 pickup those cell calls and make calls using the cell number.

I know, I know.. showing my age again.. well when I was a kid, we didn't even have a phone in the house. We'd go down to a store to use a phone and instead of a dial, it had a crank. Turning the crank would ring the operator, who would ask for an exchange and city, ie., MU7 would refer to Murray Hill 7 prefix and then the local number. Murray Hill is a particular neighborhood in New York. Each area had it's own alpha-digit prefix code.

Nowadays we have cell phones and we have grown so dependant on the convenience, not realizing that at one time, you had to go somewhere to use a telephone.

Well...I am old enough...but we did not have any crank-phones at least! (maybe a couple of cans on a string... ), but as a kid our exchange in Berlin was "Valley-eight" being VA-8, in other words, 828 prefix. Haven't thought of it that way in years!

10 digit dialing would be more bothersome, but, as someone mentioned already, there are so many instances where you already had to dial 10 digits, that this is not really such a big change to me.

I remember dialing the 4 digit number for local calls. I also remember everybody on the street being on the same line.

I always dialed 1 + the area code however a few friends I know will be in for a shock if they have not added the 203 to the list of contacts..

and I hope they don't come to me asking why.
