That's 30% of the time the telephone has even been in existence.

I know, I know.. showing my age again.. well when I was a kid, we didn't even have a phone in the house. We'd go down to a store to use a phone and instead of a dial, it had a crank. Turning the crank would ring the operator, who would ask for an exchange and city, ie., MU7 would refer to Murray Hill 7 prefix and then the local number. Murray Hill is a particular neighborhood in New York. Each area had it's own alpha-digit prefix code.

Nowadays we have cell phones and we have grown so dependant on the convenience, not realizing that at one time, you had to go somewhere to use a telephone.

Harddrive posted : if it is a long distance number in your area code, you will still have to dial the 1 before the area code + telephone number. for example, calling from Hartford to Mystic is long distance in the 860 area code. you have to dial a 1 before dialing the area code + telephone number. but dialing Norwich to Mystic is local and only requires the area code + telephone number. the number 1 is not needed to make the call nor will be accepted and youo will get a 'denial' from your carrier.
