6100-Anyone else have this problem?

My connection isn't always good. I'm told that there's nothing wrong with the modem or with the line, and I've had Verizon technicians out to my apartment before on several different occasions months apart.

I thought that maybe that the lines in my apartment building itself were bad or that the weather affected them (I live in an outside apartment and the wall the line is in is exposed to the elements). I'm told no.

But this is the strangest thing. In order to jumpstart my connection or even maintain it at times, I have to make a phone call. I end up dialing my own number and leaving the phone off the hook. If I end the call, the internet connection ends as well.

I can also hear my modem "working".

The phone is a GE slimline, corded, which is hooked into a GE answering machine. There is a filter on the line. At one point, I had five filters on it, but I've gone back to one because it was having the same effect.

Other than my DSLink, I have nothing wireless and there's no microwave by my computer. I have no idea what my neighbor downstairs has, but I doubt she has a microwave in her living room, either.

So. Can anyone tell me why making a phone call will make my connection work? The last tech out was stumped and it was obvious he's been working in the field for years...

You are describing the "high open" problem.

It is caused by faulty wiring. While that could be in the incoming line, it is more likely to be a problem in the house wiring.

I kinda figured as much. I'm glad to have an technical explanation of it now, thanks!

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment building, so I don't know if this can be repaired or not.

Sigh.
