Hmmm...

I'm all for choices, but I don't see what this offers us that isn't already available. I have both an N95 and an N97. Both are unlocked and I can use them with just about any carrier in the U.S. or Europe that uses SIM cards.

What does a Google phone bring to the equation that's not already there?

Hmmm...Symbian is the OS on 50% of all the phones in the world and is also open source:

So I still don't see what a Google phone offers, unless it's less expensive than competing phones.

That article says that the Symbian source code won't be published until next year. Anyway, point taken.

Perhaps nothing. In that case, it will only be competing against other unlocked phones rather than phones in general.
