| [Extreme Plus] 25 Mb service, getting mixed messages on Docsis 2
Hi, I'm close to jumping on board of the 25 mb/s service (I'm at 10 now)... I actually tried upping to 25 but was told that I'd have to ditch my SB5100 and get the new Docsis 3 modem (which I hear is a piece of crap). Can anyone confirm if I can move up to 25 without ditching my Mootorola docsis 2.0? I get mixed messages, which is slowing down my decision-making. If I can, how do I ensure that when I call Rogers I can call their bluff? |

If you're going to 25 Mbps you should use a D3 modem. And at this time the only thing Rogers is offering is the smc gateway for d3. |

| reply to Confusedguy Thanks.. I suspected so. I'll try to hold off until Motorola comes out with their Rogers supported Docsis 3.
One last question.. the complaints about the current modem/router.. I'm not a networking guy, but I hear there is potential DHCP issues/security flaws? I just need fast service for bringing in streaming media, and moving around data within my house (stream to PS3 from Media Hub, etc)... I dont do anything too wild here (but I am pretty media-heavy)... would these current router limitations affect me, or is this for more hardcore networking use? Thank you very much. |

| From what I've read, the router is fairly well crippled in its abilities, and the interaction between the router and modem is not good. The last SMC router I had bricked in just over 12 months and not very good dishing out a decent wireless signal so I avoid SMC anyway.
Personally, even if I wanted faster service, (and I love speed), I wouldn't pay Rogers the exhorbitant amount they want for the DOCSIS 3 tiers (25 & 50Mbps). They also don't buy you much in the way of additional bandwidth. |

| reply to Confusedguy I called Rogers and they told me I needed a D3 modem for the 25Mb service. I am going to stick with their Extreme service for now. I might go with the faster speeds if there is a better D3 modem and more bandwidth for the price (I won't be holding my breath on that one). |

@rogers.com | reply to Confusedguy no sense going to 25mb speed,, you'll just hit your cap faster if you plan on useing it. Apparently rogers has the right to reduce your speed if you go over your cap. |

54gl - yes, with Tomato |

| reply to sbrook Actually, they've figured out how to get DD-WRT micro onto *almost* every model.

I managed to get mine to work by having Robbers assign a new IP address to the modem. Before it's address was 192.168.0.1 it's no longer that. The router used that same IP and was causing a conflict.
The download speed is curtailed quite a bit. When I use my Dlink router on a wireless connection I get about 10Mbps on the speed test. When I use the SMC router (wireless) I get 17Mbps. With a wired connection I get the full 25Mbps |

| reply to Confusedguy I just called Rogers and the rep instructed me that the 18mbps Extreme Plus package is no longer available. The fastest I could get was Extreme. What gives? I know the 25mb/50mb tiers aren't available yet in Kitchener, but I had Extreme Plus back in August (downgraded when I moved for what I thought was temporarily), and now its gone? |

Extreme Plus is now 25Mbps ... so if that tier isn't available where you are I suspect they stopped sale of the old tier. |
