[ Express] cannot get to one website

My parents are unable to get to one specific website from either of their PCs. The site is available from other networks. The name resolves ok, but just in case I used OpenDNS. I also did an ipconfig /cleardns, deleted cache and cookies and tried IE and FF. No response when I ping the website from their network, but responds from other networks. It's a simple site that doesn't use any flash, etc.

The tracert is different from mine, although I am on Rogers too. Their tracert times out after 14 hops, when mine reaches the website.

If anyone can suggest what the problem might be and how to correct it, I would appreciate it. I really don't want to call Rogers support for this!

Thanks.

Could their particular IP address be banned?

Are your IP addresses on the same block? Maybe that site still blocks the 99.X block (although that's a long shot)

I checked and the IP is not blocked.

It's strange that my tracert takes a different route than theirs, even though we're both with Rogers.

They were able to reach the site just 1 week ago. My only workaround is that they use Hotspot Shield.

Does the site resolve to the same IP address. Some sites are multi-homed and will resolve to a different IP address.

Without seeing the tracerts and knowing the address/ip you're trying to reach, there's not a lot we can say.

Have you tried Rogers DNS?
24.153.23.114 and secondary 24.153.22.67
cheers

And your own IP address vs their IP address? (First 3 sections only so as not to identify yourselves)

From my place, I get a slightly different tracert from you, but again going from Rogers Metro Toronto Newkirk Rd like you. Your parents route out of Rogers is different, but would appear not to be the problem ... there's definitely something weird as it goes through comcast's network to stemmons Texas, but we all go the same way and aren't experiencing the delays there.

This kind of scenario is common with bogon IPs ... They are ranges of IP addresses that were previously set as "unused" or were blacklisted. The usual scenario to prevent traffic bouncing everywhere and anywhere is not to have a routing for them. So, it seems likely that myserverhosts.com doesn't have a routing or has blacklisted the IP address range your parents are in.

The only way around this once proven is to get them to update their routing tables. (and unfortunately many network admins are VERY reluctant to update routing tables to include routing for previously bogon IPs ...

Anyway ... if you can post your parents' IP address (first 3 parts) that should help prove or disprove this theory!

Their IP is 99.226.15x.x and mine has a different 3rd octet.

OK, I would suspect a problem with the routing back to your parents IP. If the hosting company is cooperative, ask them to do a tracert back to your parents IP and to your IP.
