| [Other] Multi-Tech Router not allowing FTP Traffic
I recently had my Multi-Tech router fail. It was a 2003 model, 550VPN. Everything was working correctly, Telnet, PCAnywhere, FTP, remote management, etc. We replaced with old identical router from our other office, reset to spec, and all was well. Our outside IT guy suggested replacing old with new model, and now there are problems. Multi-Tech 820. We have tweaked everything to get settings correct, but now am unable to use FTP. It seems to hang at switching to passive mode (227) and times out. Multi-Tech and outside guy say everything looks good, but it doesnt work for FTP, unless you access thru a command line, Unix box, or IE 5. Then all is well, but unacceptable for normal use. I can only access now, when in local lan, using the local IP. It used to work local, using external IP with no problem. If I put old router in place, everything works normal again. We are all stuck trying to resolve this. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. |

| For Passive FTP to work you have to specify a range of Open Ports (Forwarded Ports) in the ephemeral range (above 1024) to the FTP servers LAN IP.
Did you copy all the Port Forwarding rules from the Old Router to the New Router? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| I have set the forwarding ports at 1025-3500 in the router as well as FTP software. This is the same settings used in old router. I ran a test from a web site called wormly dot com. The test worked perfectly, I watched it remotely on the FTP server console, while at home. I do have reason to believe it is a port issue as well. |

| As a temporary test, have you tried placing the FTP server LAN IP in the DMZ to see if Passive FTP will now work? I'd try that to see what happens. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| There are no DMZ settings on this router. It is a bit of a PIA to set up, but our outside IT guy uses the brand all the time, and is quite familiar with them, as I am becoming rapidly. He has gotten the manufacturer involved as well. I removed the new one today, and put old one back in service. I went to my laptop, hit FTP link, and it went right in with no problems. I am letting outside guy know I have removed it until he finds a solution for this very expensive ($1000) piece of equipment. I already have too many days time invested as well, I have other work to do too. FYI- my laptop is running on an aircard, so there is no connection to my office LAN whatsoever. I use it for testing and on the road for internet access. |
