1 edit | pcAnywhere Ebarq DSL W/ Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Port Forwarding
I'm trying to get pcAnywhere working and don't seem to be able to get the port forwarding right.
Just yesterday, I installed Embarq DSL with EQ-660R ADSL modem. The internet connection worked fine. I then inserted the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 wireless router and the connection again worked fine both wired and wireless. Embarq_Joey was a great help getting me started since I wasn't familiar with Embarq DSL - Thanks, Joey!
Today, I tried to configure pcAnywhere and got it to work between the 2 PCs (one wired, one wireless) connected on the LAN side of the router.
But I can't get it to work from an outside PC. I followed the instructions from here: »portforward.com/english/routers/···here.htm and tested with their Port Checker Tool. The tool said the ports were not open.
Any ideas? |

1 edit | You are being double-NAT'ed as both your 660R and your Buffalo are running NAT. I'd bridge your 660R and let your Buffalo handle DHCP/NAT. Search these forums for instructions on how to bridge the 660R, it is a fairly common topic.
*EDIT: I found these instructions on the web: »www.ehow.com/how_2283354_bridge-···dem.html |

| reply to Gary A Bridge the 660r - hardcode an internal IP on the computer you will be remoting to. Make sure you use an IP outside of the range that the buffalo router uses for DHCP.
Log into the buffalo, and point your 2 ports to the newly configured IP on your PC.
You will also have to open the ports on any software firewall you may have installed on the PC (Norton, Mcafee, Windows firewall). |

| reply to Hazy Arc Embarq_Joey IM'ed me the same link, but the page wouldn't load on my laptop. It hung IE and I had to kill it with Task Manager. Weird
So I tried it on the desktop and it displayed fine there. I just printed it off and will start bridging the 660. First I've got to recable the PC direct to the 660.
I've already got a static IP address set in the wired PC I want to host pcAnywhere. Then I'll have to check the Windows Firewall.
I'll post back (if I can reconnect) he-he-he |

| reply to Tarheels Fan OK. I got the 660 into bridge mode. I had to do a factory reset on the Buffalo router in order to communicate, which is how I am set up now.
Guess I'm not as smart as I thought I was... how do I set a static IP between the PC (WinXP Home) and the router LAN side? |

| What is the IP of your buffalo router? 192.168.1.1?
If so, go to your TCP/IP settings on your computer you will be remoting to. You will find this under network connections / local area connection/ properties
Setup the ip - For example IP 192.168.1.250 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.168.1.1 - point your DNS to the buffalo (192.168.1.1) |

| Looks like it may have worked. I'm running with a static IP address of 192.168.11.250
I've also edited the NAT table to forward the 2 ports (5631 & 5632) as described at portforward.com in my opening post, to this static IP. Then I edited the Windows Firewall to add the same 2 ports. I ran the Port Checker Tool and this time it found the ports open.
One last acid test with my pcAnywhere buddy from his remote PC and we'll know for sure if this works. |

| Bingo, that worked. My brother-in-law was just able to connect with pcAnywhere from his office in Indiana.
THANKS GUYS!!
Now I move on to setting up DynDNS. We're doing all this to be able to help Mom when she gets into trouble and we're not around. |

| It's easier to just install the DynDNS client on a computer on your network than it is to configure it in your router...I have both the DynDNS and OpenDNS clients installed on my personal computer so that my IP address is constantly updated for both services...and both clients work flawlessly with minimal setup. |

| reply to Gary A I am gonna let you in on a little secret called
www.logmein.com
There is a free version, that you can install on any computer and don't have to worry about any of that. Its all web based, so no need to have a program installed. It works great! Its the only thing I use now. |

Last step, I got the DynDNS installed, set up and working just the way I wanted.
Thanks again to everyone for their help today. I'm a happy camper. |

| Sorry, after watching the game, I couldn't resist posting.
I finally got home yesterday afternoon and was able to load pcAnywhere remote (not my favorite, but my brother-in-law already had a copy of ver 11) on my desktop and test it sucessfully to my in-laws PC through the Embarq 660 modem set to bridge mode and the Buffalo router with port forwarding setup.
In the past, these 85 year-olds would frequently call me with questions and trying to listen to them verbally describe the issue would leave me totally confused as to what was going on. Once last winter my wife & I drove 3 hrs down and 3 hrs back just to fix a problem. Now, as long as they don't pull the cables out, I should be able to fix most issues using this setup.
Always wanting to save money, I'm glad we were able to talk them into trading up from the dial-up connection they had been using, to Embarq, oops, I mean CenturyLink, DSL, even if its not one of the higher speed packages. For email and a little web surfing, its fine for them and I can live with the slower response time of pcAnywhere. |
