And its an old system. Not a lot of new hardware in it. Vid card was updated in May of 08. And rest was new in 2006. Stable for what I use it for.

definitely. many apps will hard lock windows with no pagefile. you never want to run without one. even if everything works now, youll install a program later on and will be going crazy trying to figure out why windows hardlocks.

If you have 4 gig of memory and a 512 card and 32 bit OS . . .it's going to add the memory from the card, then main memory up until it hits the limit. Depending on your version of Windows, it may be different in what it displays to you as available.

If you have 64 bit, you'll get around this problem.

So if you use 2GB of RAM, and you allocate 1GB for vid VRAM, then you only have 1 GB going toward OS. Like that kind of thing.

But then also if you have a 1GB video card it also was counted as memory addressing in 32bit OS. Or does the GPU handle that RAM on its own? I thought that only occurred if the GPU had an OS on its chip. Thats why I put the question marks. I was unsure.

I didn't really know since I am running a 64bit OS (WinXP64SP2), with 4GB of RAM. Old computer, not capable of running Windows 7 without upgrading the heck out of it. I suppose I could try to put Win7 on here, but I would have to install a LOT of stuff. Games mostly. Vram is given a RANGE that is 128 to 512MB big AND THEN PAGED
the addressing of rest is handled BY THE GPUS ON BOARD CONTROLER

RAWR people need to stop this when they dont know what there talking about

you could have a 32bit OS and 100GB GPU and the OS would only ever see as much at 512MB at a time
the driver then pages handles the paging of that range
so when ever some thing is writen to that range the driver does some address translation magic and put it in to its local(on the GPU) ram

it USED to seem like the whole card was address becouse untill now the framebuffer on the card was the same size or smaller then VGA memory hole

So if you have 4GB of RAM and 1GB vidcard RAM, technically cant you only use 3 for OS?

IIRC, everything rated at that speed is 240 pin, pretty much any ram you're buying for a machine that's not archaic will be 240 pin.

I have a machine with 2 GB ram.
I will be getting Windows 7 premium in a few days and I wanted to up my memory. For a few reasons I chose to go with 32 bit.
so 4GB is it.
I need to get
DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM at 800MHZ
and I would like to get 2- 2GB sticks (i have read its better to get it this way than 4- 1 GB sticks)

I dont know how to find out how many pin but they all look like 240 pin

I hear Crucial is the best but I donno.

Can someone gimme a link or something where I can just go and purchase please?
